In s3 e1 was that the entire highschool @the mansion for Elena's Birthday? People didn't question why the history teacher is there? Elena got like no hugs, she barely associated with other people.

My theory is that everyone normal and sane in Mystic Falls have barricaded themselves inside their houses. Everyone else are either compelled or suicidal. That's why Carol's never been overthrown - is it really a democracy when someone can inherit such a position, and keep it? - and that's why no-one's tried to get rid of all the vampires. They're all starving and isolated inside of their houses and most have probably gone insane and murdered each other by now.

I guess the writers thought that one chick shouting "Happy Birthday, Elena" would be enough to show her human contacts.....

  7. Well considering Plec thinks that Elena having an iq over 140 is OBVIOUS, not surprising.

Now, that would be interesting! Anyway, we had the same problem in Buffy: why would anyone live in Sunnydale?

And that is really strange. We saw Caroline in Season 1 interacting with the girls at schools but Elena and Bonnie never talked with someone outside their circle. And is Elena popular at school? We know that Caroline is but we don't know about Elena or Bonnie.

  10.   Now, that would be interesting! Anyway, we had the same problem in Buffy: why would anyone live in Sunnydale?

Except that that show was self-aware. People lived there and just ignored that its going on, being in denial and all - for hundred years and more Mayor kept everything under the wraps and after that it was just denial, but everyone was aware of what is going on to one level or the other.

Its just that in buffyverse, the weird shit is also happening everywhere and being handled everywhere - we know that Government is aware at some level, then we have Wolfram&Hart rooted in mayor cities, covering things up, etc.

Even in Sunnydale when some citizen is faced with something utterly werid, they do not really question it anymore(example being the Beneath you episode in S7). They know that something weird is going on but they chose to ignore till they can be safe from it. Also there was implication that more people are "disappearing" or moving out than moving in into town.

Thus BTVS was aware of the weirdness and handled the town and world reaction to that stuff to a degree.

A self-respecting Sunnydale citizen would look through the window, see an entire crusade on horses marching by, go "NOPE", close the curtains and go back to watching TV.

In TVD there's no real exposition nor narrative to explain why the town is SO FUCKING LIFELESS.
