  Well, in the books blood sharing was very personal and a HUGE part of connection. With blood, you are taking someones life. If it is given freely--especially between vampires--it is considered VERY intimate. As for the 'viking vampires', in the books Klaus (part of The Old Ones) are of Nordic decent existing since 2500 B.C. Now the books and the show vary much after that. I don't think in the novels she was adopted either. They did add in new ideas to the show than that is present in the book.
