I agree that Derek should tell Mer himself. Mer is already feeling like a failure right now so choosing someone over her to work with him.. will continue to make her feel like that.

Anyway from the sides it looks like Mer is gonna work with Derek, maybe Der will realize that he needs her and she knows this better than any resident and him. With her mother and all. She would be great with the patients, their families and he would need all the support. This is gonna be so emotional for him.. could be his future :(
