Dr. John Ellison works in the ER. He and his wife lost their 8-year-old daughter last year to cancer. Now they and their 10-year-old son Oliver are trying to move forward. While trying to save an injured squirrel, John ends up in the middle of a drive-by shooting where he saves the life of a young boy who turns out to be the son of a prison inmate who is the head of a gang. With the rival gang still out to kill the boy, John ends up in the middle of a gang war in order to try and save him.
John gets nurse Gretchen Polk to help. He fakes the test results of a domestic abuse victim which Gretchn has taken a special interest in. The falsified tests get the victim admitted so that she has to spend time with social services. In return, Gretchen helps John sneak Antoine out of the hospital. In order for Antoine to get out safely, John attacks the rival gang members waiting in the lobby in the hopes of distracting them. The plan works. Antoine is safe but afterwards John is sent to therapy.
