On Law & Order: SVU Season 17 Episode 23, the corruption at Rikers' Island becomes dangerous for everybody, as Mike Dodds finds himself on the wrong end of a gun and someone is targeting Barba.

Corrupt corrections officer Munsen finds out his wife called Olivia to help her and the kids safely leave him. Olivia and Mike come to the scene and Munsen tries to talk them away but they insist on coming in. Munsen keeps emphasizing that he likes Mike and has no problem with him, but while Olivia is taking the kids out he suddenly pulls out a gun and grabs his wife. Munsen orders Mike to leave, but Mike refuses to go. There is a struggle for the gun and Mike is shot.

While Benson is dealing with this, Munsen's attorney and union rep try to intimidate Barba into taking a plea deal that would result in very little jail time. Barba refuses and shortly afterwards a thug confronts him in the elevator and warns him he will be shot soon. Barba notifies building security and shows the footage to Rollins and Carisi, who lay into him for not reporting a bunch of threats that have been going on all year. Barba didn't take any of the threats seriously til now. They began after he indicted some cops who shot an unarmed man.

Mike has lost a lot of blood but his dad says he's a fighter and at first that seems to be true. Mike awakens and is expected to make a full recovery. However, he seems to be slurring his words and not recognizing people. Benson tells his doctor and Mike is rushed away.

Soon after, Dodds Senior bursts into tears as he tells Benson that Mike had a massive stroke and is brain dead. Benson must tell her squad. Worse still, she struggles with guilt because if she had searched Munsen maybe he would not have shot Mike.

Meanwhile, the thug threatening Barba is arrested and Carisi tells Barba he must have a security detail because the guy is a low level operative in a gang that wants to threaten Barba's life.
