Amelia is the youngest sibling of Derek Shepherd's family, and a recovering drug addict. Her storylines often revolve around her struggle with sobriety, recklessness, and ambition as a neurosurgeon.

Amelia has struggled with drugs and drinking and much of her issues stem from her and Derek witnessing their father get killed in a convenenice store.

She also battles with being in Derek's shadow and the black sheep of her family.

She's an incredible neurosurgeon in her own right, but she's overcome many traumas including the loss of a child and a spouse. She's also overcome a brain tumor.

Amelia has had a rollercoaster love life throughout both series, with her her fiance Ryan dying on Private Practice. She got married to Owen on Grey's Anatomy, but they eventually divorced. She also started a relationship with Link and they have a child together, Scout, but she didn't want to get married to him when he wanted marriage, driving them apart.

She also had a relationship with non-binary doctor, Kai.
