Covey flees a house and dives into the water.

We see an adult Covey/Eleanor sitting on the beach watching the waves crash.

Byron speaks about his

mother and surfing and being a Black doctor at Career Day at a school.

Benny is in her home avoiding a phone call from her brother, Benny.

Byron is claling because his mother, Eleanor, was in the water and hit her head. She's in the hospital.

Eleanor learns from the doctor that she has a brain tumor.

Byron and his mother bond and she says that she won't be going down without a fight.

We flash ahead to Benny running late to the reading of theit mother's will. Benny hasn't been around in eight years.

Eleanor leaves them a flashdrive of her talking about her childhood and needs them to watch it together.

They meet up and their mother opens with telling them that Eleanor isn't her real name and she's not really an orphan. She starts talking about her life as Covey.

Covey's parents seemed happy, but her father, Lin has a gambling issue.

Lin tries to keep Covey away from Gibbs, the boy who she has been secretly dating and loves and who is London bound and wants her to come with him.

Covey and Gibbs go training together when a hurricane strikes. They get caught up in the water.

She got pulled away from Bunny and Gibbs and thought she was going to die.

Her father showed up, and it pushed her to swim to shore. Lin blames Gibbs for Covey almost dying and warns him against being around his daughter.

The storm and a fire ruined Lin and the family's shop. They learn that the shop fire wasn't an accident. They targeted the ship because of Lin and because he was behind in paying money to a loan shark, Little Man.

Covey goes off on her father for being a drunk and gambler and for calling her mother a slur.

Covey is upset and gets comforted by Pearl because her father is still upset after her mother left.

Little Man shows up at Covey's home when Lin isn't around, and he tries to make moves and assault Covey. He tells her that the family shop belongs to him, and that Covey must do whatever he pleases for the sake of the shop.

Covey is rattled from the experience and locks herself in the room until her father gets home.

She confides in her father about what happened, and he tells her that he gave permission for Little Man to see her and that he's arranging her union with Little Man/Clarence. Lin says that the only way he can get cleared of their debt and protect everything is through the marriage.

Covey tells Gibbs about her father's arrangment with Little Man and he tells her to come to London with him that night.

She doesn't want to leave her father behind or they'll kill him and tries to plot a plan to ride things out.

Covey tells Gibbs that she loves him and they make love on the beach under the moonlight.

Covey goes off on Pearl for not coming up with a way out of this marriage for her andn goinog along with the weddding by baking a Black Cake for the wedding.

She finally has her wakeup call and knows that no one will save her.

Covey tells her father that he's dead to her on her wedding day because of the marriage. He seems to show some signs of regret for what he did to her.

At the wedding reception, Covey notices that Pearl made a Black Cake with lilac even though she hates lilac.

Little Man/Clarence Henry starts coughing and foaming at the mouth at some point, and collapses. While everyone rushes to his aid, Covey runs away.

She rips off her wedding dress and dives into the ocean, swimming as far as she can until she reaches a cave. They call off the search for Covey. And the police tell Lin that Covey is a murder suspect.

Little Man's brother and men beat up Lin. They threaten Covey's life.

Bunny tracks Covey down at the beach they would swim to and tells her what happened. She brings Covey clothes, food, and money to head to England and information about where to stay once she gets there.

Bunny tells Covey that she can't worry about her father anymore and that she's free now and can't ever come back.

Bunny tells Covey that everyone must think she's dead including Gibbs. And they share an emotional goodbye. Covey boards a ship to London.

Covey arrives in London under the name COventina and meets a roomate, Eleanor, Elly.
