Recap

Frasier arrives in Boston with Niles and Daphne's son, David. Alan Cornwall meets them at the airport. Frasier knows Alan from his days at Oxford. Alan also wrote David's recommendation to Harvard.

Frasier is in Boston to guest lecture Cornwall's class at Harvard. He also wants to check in on Freddy, who didn't make it to Martin's funeral.

In years past, Freddy dropped out of Harvard to become a firefighter, and it's still a sticking point between Freddy and his father.

Frasier brings him something he thinks Martin would have wanted Freddy to have, but Freddy doesn't open it. Frasier is leaving for Paris the next day, but Freddy tells him he doesn't have time to spend with him. He hasn't told Frasier a lot about his life.

When Frasier's guest lecture goes well, the of the department, Olivia Finch, is determined to convince Frasier to stay on at Harvard.

Frasier shows up at Freddy's door with steaks and Scotch. He wants to cook him a 5-star meal and hash things out. David shows up. He desperately wants to connect with Freddy, but the age difference is an obstacle.

Then Alan and Olivia show up to help make dinner. They plan to try and convince Frasier to stay at Harvard.

Eve shows up, and Freddy pulls her outside. He wants her to pretend to be his girlfriend. Since she's a budding actress, she's happy to do it. But she has a baby in a stroller named John. They try to sneak John into the apartment without anyone seeing him.

Frasier notices that there's a bed sheet on the pullout sofa and wonders if Freddy and Eve are fighting.

Alan remembers that Eve is a waitress down at the bar and that she's just had a baby with some firefighter. Frasier assumes that the baby is Freddy's, making Frasier a grandfather.

Freddy admits that the baby is Eve's but not his. They are just living together to save money. When Frasier offers to give him money, Freddy takes offense. Then Frasier gets angry about Freddy dropping out of Harvard.

Freddy couldn't bring himself to go to Martin's funeral. A while back, Freddy's best friend and fellow firefighter died in a fire. He left behind a wife and a kid, Eve, and her baby.

When Martin heard that Freddy was having a hard time coping, he got on a plane to see him and shared the times he'd lost friends on the force and how he got through it. It made Freddy not feel alone. Frasier is surprised to hear his son felt alone.

Freddy finally opens the gift. It's a framed flag from Martin's funeral. It has the inscription, "This flag was flown over the state capital in honor of Detective Martin Crane for his service to the nation and his beloved city of Seattle."

Later, Frasier takes the job at Harvard. He's also bought the building where Freddy and Eve live. Frasier is moving into the large apartment across the hall. He wants Freddy to move in with him so they can get closer, and Eve and John can keep the other apartment. Freddy balks, but when Eve hears they can live there rent-free, she happily agrees to the plan.

Frasier Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

Alan: And how are things between you two? I remember how tense it was when he dropped out of Harvard.
Frasier: All these years later, I still don’t get it, but he’s forging his own path, and I support that.
Alan: And I believe you. Oh, look, now we’re both liars.

Alan: I still can’t believe how big TV personality Frasier Crane walks away from his talk show.
Frasier: It was time. I told them get off your knees and stop begging. I’m already out the door.
Alan: And things with Charlotte?
Frasier: She told me the same thing. But it was for the best. After 20 years in Chicago, It was time for George Bailey to get that old bag out of the closet and see the world.
