On Madam Secretary Season 2 Episode 23, Elizabeth gets advice from Michael about what to do about the exchange with Russia for Dmitri. Michael thinks it's a terrible idea, and doesn't think President Dalton would agree, but Elizabeth wants him to get numbers on how it would make the administration look. Michael comes back to Elizabeth with the numbers which confirmed if the United States was the hand over Buckley it would make the administration look stupid.

Unfortunately, Michael gives Elizabeth information about President Dalton looking for a new Secretary of State. Elizabeth doesn't believe it at first, but Michael is able to provide her with three candidates who are being vetted. Elizabeth decides to take her concerns to President Dalton. She lays into him about going beyond her job description to do what was best for the administration, but President Dalton is able to stop her before she goes to far. President Dalton tells Elizabeth he was never planning on firing her, but was actually wanted to offer her the Vice President position. Elizabeth tells him she will need time to think about it before making a decision.

While talking to President Dalton, Elizabeth is able to convince him to go ahead with the trade of Buckley for Dmitri. Elizabeth finally tells Henry who volunteers to go with her to Finland to identify the Dmtri. When they make it to Finland, Henry is discouraged when the Russian government offers a man who is not Dmitri. Thankfully, after Henry starts to head back to the car, Dmitri is taken from the car and given over to Henry. At first, Dmitri spits at Henry's feet, but after seeing Elizabeth, Dmitri embraces him.
