Recap

We got off to a rough start. It happens. Cases like this? Missing rich girl, dead guy in the drunk, and me with all my, I don’t know, issues. I’m not being modest. I’m really good at what I do. A man like Jonathan Siegel wouldn’t have called me otherwise. I just needed a moment to settle in. Anyway, back to business.

In black and white, there’s a floater in the pool. In color, Sugar is in the pool.

Sugar meets with Bernie. He’s not keen on Bernie, but Bernie is impressed with where Sugar hangs his hat.

Bernie isn’t worried about Olivia. He knows her better than anyone, including Melanie. Bernie wasn’t happy about Sugar and Melanie, suggesting that Sugar had no idea. In response, Sugar ticks off everything he knows. Then he hands one of the disturbing photos of Rachel to Bernie.

Bernie says he did not take that photograph, and Sugar thanks him for telling the truth. Bernie wonders if Sugar ever loved someone so much he’d give his life for him because that’s how he felt about Rachel. Olivia is all he has left. And if Sugar thinks he doesn’t care about his daughter, then fuck you and fuck off.

Davy and Kenny broke into Sugar’s place, planting listening devices and whatnot. It helps when they’re stupid. It’s not as much fun, but it moves things along.

Sugar visits with Olivia’s friends. Olivia didn’t have a regular guy. Too much partying. Nobody seems to have anything that will help his investigation, but maybe that’s also helping the investigation. Interspersed in all of the scenes are clips from old movies. Is he writing a script?

Bernie’s people are talking about his latest movie in conjunction with eight accusers, and their story is waiting to be told. He broke the cardinal rule of producing by using his own money. Is Davy guilty? It’s David. Nobody should use the word victim.

Sugar talks with Ruby and Jonathan simultaneously, and he explains to Ruby what happened with Jonathan. Jonathan doesn’t think much of Bernie, his movies, or Davy’s mother. Sugar senses that theirs is not the closest of families. They have their reasons, Jonathan says.

Olivia was at the house of Ms. Carmen Vasquez, who was raped and murdered. His body is now in the trunk of Olivia’s car. His name was Clifford Carter.

Although he’s bound to tell the police, he’s going to pretend he never opened the car. He’s not narrowing anything down, and the case keeps growing.

After dinner, Sugar’s hand acts up, and Ruby wants him to call Dr. Vickers today.

Melanie called. She’s at an AA meeting. She was 23 years sober, which ended two weeks ago. Last night, she brought a stranger into her home, which sobered her up. We get fucked up because we’re lonely and unwilling to get hurt again, so we make made choices.

What surprised her was that Sugar didn’t take advantage. He took care of her, tucked her in, and left. He made her feel like she deserved a second chance, so she’s taking it.

After the meeting, she takes him home to eat. Was he following her yesterday? She says she’s cagey when sober, and she follows that up by not answering questions. When Olivia started spending time with Melanie, her online presence changed. She became involved in women’s issues. Then Melanie uses almost the same words Bernie did in relation to Olivia. But Sugar reads her tells.

Is she in trouble? Does she know that Olivia is in trouble? He doesn’t understand why she’s putting on an act and hiding something, like where she is or where her body can be found. He knows she thinks she’s helping Olivia, but she’s making things worse. But he will find Olivia. It’s what he does, and he’s very good at it.

Sugar thinks Melanie knows where Olivia is and plans on following her.

Sugar is watching Minnie and Moskowitz. She’s talking about movies being a conspiracy, setting you up to believe everything. But what are we being set up to believe here?

Sugar is being followed. He spots Wiley and follows him. Nobody has seen Carl. He tries calling the phone he left for him, but it’s out of service. He takes Wiley with him.

He knows he shouldn’t care, and it’s none of his business, but he can’t help it. He follows the phone using an app to a hotel where Wiley tries to get into a room. Carl is dead inside, having overdosed using the money Sugar gave him. There’s someone in the bathroom, and Sugar wants to know what he gave Carl. The guy doesn’t expect Sugar to be so Sugary.

Why does he care so much? He almost leaves Wiley behind but reconsiders.

Sugar visits Ruby. He hopes she’ll care for Wiley. But this is the cat’s house, and Marumbay only has one rule: no dogs. While he’s there, he wonders who could have been following him in a gray VW. Big mistake, Sugar tells her. They could have been friends.

When he leaves, she calls someone, noting that Sugar is being tailed. Obviously, they are watching him.

The body is gone from Olivia’s trunk, but he finds a blonde hair.

Davy and Kenny share what they found in Sugar’s place. He’s curious about the invitation. Bernie needs to know if Sugar is a positive or negative force. What if he looks beyond Bernie to Davy? For some reason, Bernie relies on Davy for a full report by tomorrow evening.

Sugar isn’t supposed to get this involved. He’s supposed to observe, report, and write it down. They’re observers. That’s what Ruby keeps telling us, but he can’t help it. He can’t stop. He’s involved. Olivia reminds him of Jen, his sister. He hopes this case has a different ending.

A woman named Teresa and two children come home to find strangers in her house. They’re looking for Clifford, who was fucking her sister. She must be Carmen’s sister. Clifford was his main man and knew things about him and his clients. He hasn’t been seen or heard from in over two weeks, and he’s nervous. The last picture he took is of Carmen saying, “fuck this bitch.”

The next picture Clifford took and sent was of Melanie.

Sugar Season 1 Episode 2 Quotes

He’s hiding something, or at least I hit a nerve. Being told to fuck off is usually a sign of progress.

Sugar [internal]

Bernie: I gotta tell ya, Sugar. I think you’re wasting your time and my father’s money. Olivia will come back any day now, just like she always does, ready to go to rehab again.
Sugar: If I was her father, I’d find that concerning.
Bernie: You’re not, and I don’t.
Sugar: Your father does.
