The morning after the hallucinogenic trip, James recounts the story of his and Sophie's first meeting up until the present via flashbacks.

Sophie was James's waitress, and he invited her back to his boss's house, claiming it was his, though Sophie caught onto the lie. The two spent the night drinking and dancing and soon started dating.

At a work event, Sophie lies to a potential client hoping to help get James, and she becomes a staple at his work events, lying about her London backstory.

Eventually, James gets a promotion, and Harrison questions Sophie, a claim that James brushes off.

James buys their San Francisco house, and during the housewarming party, he overhears a conversation between Harrison and Sophie in which he calls her out for not being an honest person. She claims that she's trying to be deserving of James.

From there on out, their marriage continues to crumble, culminating in an argument at a party for James the same night Sophie meets Baden. Later, James hears Sophie and Baden at the vacation house, and he goes to Caroline for comfort, and the two sleep together.

After a confrontation, the two decide to commit to their marriage and start over. Sophie brings James a business opportunity that will require an investment of 11 million dollars to be transferred through a third-party account. James uses Sophie as the third party, but when he goes to inquire about the business, he learns they never received the money.

James soon learns that the money has cleared, and he lies about going to Portland so he can follow Sophie around town. He tracks her to the ferry, where they have a confrontation, and James ultimately walks away from her. Soon after, he gets the call about her accident and finds the letter she left him, which details her leaving him.

Upon hearing that Sophie had lost her long-term memory, James told the police that she left a suicide note.

The two vow to figure things out in the present day together.
