Rya asks Danny about his childhood, and Danny recounts growing up with his twin brother Adam. Adam goes to live with his dad for a while, leaving Danny with Candy.

In school, Danny is constantly picked on, and one time he acts out of anger.

With no parents available, Danny is placed under the care of the school's guidance counselor while in school.

Danny begs to spend time with his mom at home, who has to work multiple jobs. She takes him to work at a diner/bar.

Danny keeps himself busy painting, and then a group of Black friends enters the diner. The White people in it stare at them.

The friends sit down, and one begins conversing with Danny about dinosaurs. A racist guy approaches him, and a fight ensues. Danny gets someone else's blood on his face.

Danny recounts how Marlin entered their life.

Marlin worked in a juvenile detention facility. One day he stopped by Candy's workplace at the diner, and they were in love before long.

Candy introduced him to Danny, and they hit it off. One night, Danny saw his mom and Marlin have rather physical sex.

Danny returns to school, and Adam is back from his dad's. Adam tells Danny that their father is moving to London, a story Danny tells the class.

The guidance counselor asks Danny to stay behind after class, and he begins to touch Danny inappropriately. Marlin interrupts him.

As they drive home, Marlin says he wants to marry Candy and asks Danny to do something for him and keep it a secret.

He takes Danny to a secluded place.

Adam offers to go with Marlin into the barn as Danny plays with fireflies outside.
