Alicia experiences a crisis of confidence when she feels the whole world is judging her for something she didn't do after she resigns her position as State's Attorney. But when her old client, Brett Tatro needs her help, she eventually agrees to take his case. Brett was accused of attempted murder six years ago when he was a bouncer at a strip club. Alicia represented him and the jury found him not guilty. But since then the man has died and the prosecution is recharging Brett with murder. Despite losing the first case, the prosecution seems overly confident about winning this one, since the woman who was his alibi has died and there are two new witnesses.

Memories of the original case bring Alicia back to the days when she and Cary worked together as they competed for the one open spot at Stern, Lockhart, Gardner. She also has fond memories of herself and Kalinda as colleagues and friends. Looking back, Alicia remembers a time when she thought the law was good. Now she only sees that as neutral and wonders if she can change that by opening her own small firm.
