Recap

A violent space battle with the Kaylons. Marcus runs through the corridors of The Orville, dodging explosions. In the turbolift, he is thrown around. Getting out, he runs back to the Finn family quarters to find Ty. They watch as a nearby UFP ship is destroyed. They turn around and find Isaac standing there. Ty greets him but he approaches silently. Suddenly, his eyes turn red and his face becomes frightening jaws. Marcus wakes up from the nightmare.

LaMarr joins Isaac in the Astrophysics lab. He informs Isaac they need to shut down for a half hour. Isaac leaves.

Isaac enters the mess hall and approaches a table with several crew members whose faces become stoic at his approach. He asks to join them and they allow it but aren’t happy about it. Once he sits down, they all leave.

Charly returns and apologizes. She says some of the crew are still feeling weird about him staying onboard. She tells him about her love of pancakes. She asks if he knows about the battle since he was deactivated. He tells her he has downloaded all the data about “the event,” a term that bothers her. She tells him what happened to her during the battle. Her best friend, Amanda, sacrificed herself to save Charly.

She tells Isaac he deserves to feel all the pain in the universe for the lives the Kaylon took in the battle. She tells him he should stay out of the mess hall because it makes people sick to look at him.

Charly walks out. Talla has heard what was said. She looks at Isaac sitting alone but doesn’t join him.

Isaac walks back to his lab to find someone has graffitied “MURDERER” on a wall.

While the Orville is being refitted, Kelly orders Gordon to take LaMarr out and get him wasted to make sure he takes a day off. Talla contacts Ed and asks that he and Kelly meet her in the astrophysics lab.

They examine the vandalism. Because systems were shut down, there’s no way to know who entered the lab to do it. Talla is unable to track the paint replicator and there was a DNA scrub to erase any evidence of who the culprit is. She reports the incident with Charly to Kelly and Ed.

Isaac confirms that he has been harassed by the crew continuously since being reinstated. He finds it interesting to observe human hatred.

Ed and Kelly call Charly in to discuss the vandalism and her interaction with Isaac. She tells him that reactivating and reinstating Isaac was a mistake and the crew is scared and angry.

Ed dismisses Charly after admitting he might’ve made a mistake but it’s important to have Isaac close by in case the Kaylon attack again.

Alone, Ed and Kelly try to think of a way to improve morale.

LaMarr directs a team on the ship’s hull to tear out a system for upgrade. As they get down to work, Yaphit and another crew member report in that they’re ahead of schedule. Yaphit asks about the new Pterodon. LaMarr says Gordon is bringing it in.

Gordon brings a sleek new craft into the shuttle bay. Charly comes out to admire it but gets cold when Gordon says Isaac will do the calibration on it. Gordon confesses that he feels the same way about Isaac as she does. She encourages him to stay angry about it.

Isaac reports to Turco that systems are improved considerably. Dr. Finn brings Ty to see Isaac in Engineering. They ask if he’s okay after the incident in the lab. Ty tells Isaac he believes in him.

Gordon takes the Pterodon through its paces against Charly’s drone attackers. It looks good.

Talla informs Kelly the paint was replicated by Marcus Finn. Claire, Ed, Talla, and Kelly confront him with the information. He admits it and isn’t sorry. He wants to leave the ship if Isaac is staying. He reveals that his nightmares keep him from sleeping.

Claire asks Isaac to come talk to her.

Marcus is irritated by Ty’s game in their bedroom. Claire brings Isaac into the bedroom to talk to Marcus. They send Ty out. Isaac attempts to apologize. Marcus tells him no one wants him on the ship and he wishes Isaac was dead.

Isaac walks out to a viewing corridor alone and looks into space for a long time.

Back in the lab, he records a log of various improvements that will optimize the ship’s systems, bids the Finn family goodbye, and deactivates himself.

While LaMarr reports on the Orville’s improvements, Talla contacts Ed about Isaac. Claire deduces he committed suicide. LaMarr says he might be able to revive him with Yaphit’s help.

Yaphit takes a look at the internal systems but can’t see a way to bring Isaac back.

Claire checks in on Marcus after sharing the news about Isaac. Marcus insists that he’s okay, but he doesn’t go to sleep.

Kelly checks in on Claire. Claire tells her about Dazheen Four where they ran out of water and had to stimulate their saliva glands with a pebble in their mouths. She likens it to how she’s unable to feel anything in the wake of Isaac’s death. Kelly suggests she visit the places where she and Isaac were happiest.

Ed eulogizes Isaac for the crew. Marcus listens from outside the room.

Claire heads to the simulator deck and finds Ty visiting with a hologram of Isaac. She tells him grief takes time and it’s not healthy to use the simulator to hold onto someone who has died. He leaves.

Alone, Claire activates the simulation of the restaurant where she and Isaac had a date. She sobs.

LaMarr’s team completes the refit. The bridge crew prep for departure from the dockyard. Ed and Kelly look at Isaac’s empty station. Gordon pilots them out of the yard, Burke sets a course on Ed’s orders, and the Orville takes off.

LaMarr is in bed with a Dakeeli female named Irillia. When she retrieves a post-coital snack from his end table, she finds the fork Isaac gave LaMarr for his birthday. LaMarr explains it. They discuss suicide and how its perception is different on Dakeel. Irillia points out that the memory of others is deeply honored, and that he should keep her in his mind if she were to die first and she’ll always be with him.

LaMarr gets an idea from this and runs to Engineering in his bathrobe. He extracts a disc from Isaac’s head. He gets Unk to smash it and he finds a backup in the disc.

He reports to Talla, Ed, Kelly, and Claire on it, theorizing they could still bring Isaac back. There’s a time crunch and they need someone capable of seeing in multiple dimensions. Ed realizes that it has to be Charly.

She refuses. Ed starts to get through to her when the ship is attacked by a Kaylon ship. They flee to a storm-ridden planet and hide in the atmosphere. The ship is battered and the stasis field protecting Isaac’s backup is wavering. Ed orders all the ships torpedoes loaded onto a shuttle.

They launch the shuttle and detonate it, faking out the Kaylons who leave.

LaMarr reports they need to try to revive Isaac soon. Ed order Charly to assist. She refuses and he relives her of duty.

Marcus finds Charly in the mess and asks her to help Isaac because he feels it’s his fault Isaac killed himself. Charly tries to explain it’s not his fault. When she sees the guilt he’s carrying, she makes the decision to help Isaac.

They are successful in reviving Isaac. Charly returns to duty after asserting that she didn’t help for Isaac’s sake.

Claire sits down with Isaac to make sure he won’t try to commit suicide again. He promises to come to her if he thinks he might try it again.

Marcus goes to see Isaac in the lab but doesn’t say anything and leaves.

The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Episode 1 Quotes

Grayson: You’ve been getting harassed by the crew and you haven’t said anything?
Isaac: I would remind you, Commander, that I am incapable of being hurt by such hostile interactions. In fact, it has provided me with an opportunity to observe an intriguing facet of human compartment I have not previously encountered.
Mercer: Hatred.
Isaac: Correct, sir. The behavioral data has been quite plentiful.

It really is a shame that you can’t feel anything. Because you deserve to feel all the pain in the universe.
