An injured John Dutton wishes he didn't have to do it before offering his horse peace and shooting it. He's all bloody and there's an overturned truck with a severely injured person in it.

The cops arrive. They recognize John and ask if he's all right.

Meanwhile, Jamie successfully stops the government from taking part of his father's land and Kayce catches a wild stallion.

Then we are introduced to Beth, who stands up to some corporate bigwigs and forces them to sell to her, threatening to destroy their business if they don't.

Later, Jamie tends to John's wounds. John warns him to stand strong against the people who want to. buy part of the ranch. The buyers show up despite Jamie's rejection of their offer. John sends Kayce and Rip to take care of stray horses while he goes to Bozeman to take care of business.

A guy named Ted tries to proposition Beth in a bar, which is a big mistake on his part. 

There is a standoff between the livestock police and the indigenous people, who say that a bunch of cattle are on their land and should be ahdnled their way. John asks Jamie if they have any legal recourse when it comes to the reservation. Jamie says they need friends in the US Attorneys' office.

At an auction, John talks to a guy who asks him to do a favor for him, though it benefits his idiot son.

John goes to see Kayce. He's had a rough week and wants to see his grandson. Tate is not here. He's at his other grandparents'. John says someday Tate will make Kayce make a choice, and remember this, because not knowing your grandson is the consequence of the wrong choice. He goes and Tate returns and finds a rifle.

Rip goes to see Jimmy. He heats up a branding iron. He tells Jimmy he can either take him to the sheriff's office for theft or give him a final chance at the ranch. He brands Jimmy.

Monica and Kayce talk in bed and agree to give John a chance with Tate.

John admonishes his other son Lee, who has not been helping with the cattle. He needs help running the ranch. John and Lee come across a cow giving birth and help. They discuss how investors see cows as money rather than a source of food. Lee doesn't see it that way.

Beth sees Rip in the house and they have sex. She feels he ruins it when he asks her on a date.

Kayce decides, against his better judgment, to go to the ranch so that Tate can meet his grandfather. Everyone goes fishing in the river and has a great time, though as they eat the fish they caught, Kayce's brothers criticize him raising Tate on the reservation and Kayce points out he's the only one who dared leave John's ranch and live his own way.

Later, the indigenous people and Kayce are in a house, and Kayce doesn't like the indigenous people keeping the cattle. Rainwater comes to see Kayce and says that he is using the cattle as a bargaining chip.

John allows Felix, Monica's grandfather, to hunt some buffalo, and Rainwater says that the setllers are trying to act as if the indigenous people are still what they were before the settlers arrived a century ago.

Felix goes to Kayce and tells him a war is coming and he must go with his people.

Rip order Jimmy to get on a horse despite his fear and not knowing how to ride.

John and Lee run a mission to get the cattle back. There is a gunfight. In addition, Kayce seems to run interference with the cattle. Eventually, everyone else leaves and Lee almost shoots Kayce but hesitates, and a soldier from the reservation shoots him—and it's Monica's brother.

Kayce gets Lee to safety and shoots Monica's brother, telling him there's no such thing as heaven.

John is searching for Kayce when Kayce cocmes witgh a severely injured Lee. John takes Lee and tells Kayce to talk to Jamie.

Monica is at home when Kayce returns. Tate calls her. She yells at him to get in his room.

The battle has made the news. John realizes that's what Rainwater wanted, for there to be footage of the settlers shooting at his people.

The Senator promises Rainwater that she will open a hearing.

At Lee's funeral, Tate runs around playing with another little boy. Everyone is called to follow the casket. After the service, John looks upset but puts on his sunglasses.

Kayce and John talk about Kayce's horse, but it's proabbly a symbol for Lee. John asks Kayce to stay for supper.

Later, Monica wants Kayce to tell her what happened to her brother but Kayce won't answer. She walks away and he looks at his brandiing on his chest.

Jamie tells Beth that John always looked at Lee differently than him. Beth doesn't think that will ever change.

John needs Jamie and Beth more than ever. Beth wants to know who to fight. John tells her, everyone.
