Recap

A new ranger examines the bear carcass. He can't tell anything. Donnie claims he found no casings and that Rip is lying about where he was standing. John shoots a rifle into the air and sees where the casings land. He accosts Donnie and finds the casings after all. The ranger says it's obvious this was self-defense and doesn't know why the sheriff would try to disguise that.

After the ranger leaves, Donnie says he isn't going to believe Rip's story about what happened to the dead tourists.

John warns him that he's now on his enemies' list and tells Rip that the whole county has turned against him.

Jason is throwing up outside the ranch. John has no idea who he is. Beth comes out and gives Jason water and tells him to walk it off—not literally. She wants him to go in the house and get cleaned up. Jason goes and Beth and John talk about the fact that Jamie betrayed the Duttons and they need a new attorney. John plans to interfere with Jamie's ability to campaign to punish him for his indiscretion.

John's plan backfires when the governor and outgoing AG tell him that Jamie's campaign has energy and that they want HIM to step down. They feel his scandals and potential legal troubles make everyone look bad and they want him to quit until it all blows over. John says if they want him o ut, they'd better find someone who can beat him.

Unfortunately for everyone, John spies Jamie and Christina in the next room as he's leaving and decides to intimidate Jamie. Christina calls for help as Jamie is backed against a wall. John informs Jamie that he's not good enough since he let him come in the room like that. He tells the governor that Jamie has nothing in common with him but the family name.

After a brief ridiculous interlude where Jimmy falls off his horse again and blames it on putitng his hat on the bed, John tells Rip he doesn't know how much time he he has left and that he's done with doctors.

John tells Beth to put the ranch in a trust and don't let Kayce sell it after he's gone. He also wants Jamie off the payroll, which thrills Beth.

Beth shows up at the campaign headquarters. After some back and forth, she gets Jamie to give up his credit card, debit card, and truck keys since he's been effectively disowned, and breaks a coffee cup on her way out. Christina thinks this is best for Jamie. He feels free.

Rip goes to an empty-seeming strip club and has no interest in the dancers or in buying a drink. He talks to a dancer named Avery, who he wants to pay $1,000 to help him with something that he promises isn't dangerous or illegal. Avery wants to work for the Yellowstone instead, but Rip doesn't think having a woman in the bunkhouse is a good idea.

Jamie stops to get champagne at a liquor store. He sees a guy outside and offers him money. The guy doesn't want it and says some cryptic thing about a tie being a leash your master cut because he knows you're not going anywhere. Jamie seems upset as he returns to Christina's car.

Sarah comes into Jamie's office with a proposition. She's going to do a story on John. Will Jamie be a source or a subject? Christina asks to talk to Jamie privately. She tells him that she needs to know every bad thing he's helped John with. If they don't play this right, it's the end of his career. They call Sarah outside and she says she wants to do a piece on how Jamie is a new kind of politician who isn't like his father.

Rainwater and Jenkins are unaware of Avery spying on them as they talk about how they're going to build their casino/hotel and eventually take the ranch back from John.

Beth tells John that they need an environmental lawyer. There are no lawyers who know everything. Rip interrupts. He tells John privately about the recording. John tells him he needs to make this problem go away before John's death, as none of the children are up to fighting Rainwater and Jenkins for the ranch.

When Rip leaves, Beth wants to know what that was all about. Rip refuses to tell her. Beth thinks he's angry that she slept with someone else. He doesn't care about that...only about her.

The cowboys are all playing poker and Jimmy wins for once. They find it bizarre when Rip introduces them to Avery, the new groomer. He tells them to treat her like a cowboy.

They all follow her into the bunk and she decides to get changed in front of them, noting they've all seen her strip at the club. She warns them she'd better not wake up to any of them standing over her.

Walker leaves the bunkhouse and tells Beth this place is evil and he wishes he could leave. Beth says he can't. He opens her shirt and asks where her brand is. She says hers is on the inside. They kiss.

Donnie brings Kayce to the ranch in his car. He says Kayce went too far beating the drifter who tried to rob him but he's not pressing charges—however, that changes nothing as far as Rip's case is concerned. John thinks it's too bad that Donnie no longer has the stomach to stand up to people like Dan Jenkins.

Kayce tells John he wants to come home. John is shocked to hear Monica has left. Kayce wants to make a future for Tate. He says he will stay in the bunkhouse despite John's disapproval.

At the bunkhouse, Avery beats everyone at poker. Kayce walks in. Avery stares at him. Kayce asks for a bunk. He doesn't care that the cowboys think he shouldn't put his hat on the bed.

Monica and Tate arrive at Felix's. Felix puts Monica's wheelchair on the porch and brings out his wife. Monica watches Tate standing at the fence sobbing and wonders what she's done.

Kayce and Rip kidnap Dan Jenkins and put a noose around his neck. Dan confesses to the land grab plan. Rip tells Jimmy to cut Dan down but Kayce makes the horse Dani is on move, hanging him. He says they should let him hang.

Beth is crying (probably about John's prognosis). John says this table used to be full. Beth thinks that's a fantasy. She goes outside. John follows her. He tells her the important thing is people have a place to sit at the table. Beth says she's doing all this for him, not the table, and as soon as he's gone, she's selling it. John promises he's not going anywhere. Beth hugs him and then he walks off, alone.

Yellowstone Season 1 Episode 9 Quotes

Ranger: 15 feet or so. That's pretty damn close.
Rip: Close enough for me, sir.
Ranger: It's pretty clear this was self-defense. [To Donnie] I don't know why you'd want to disguise that.

Rip: I was standing right there.
Donnie: I didn't find any casings, because I don't believe him about where he was standing.
