Recap

Kayce and John meet up early in the barn. John is ready to escape to the present for a while with a ride and suggests Kayce join him. He doubts his son will catch up, but he does.

John rides to the spot he lost his wife. it's been 21 years, but it still feels like yesterday. He can still feel her, smell her. He's half a man without her and was a better father when she was there. John hopes Kayce never knows that feeling, but he already does.

Rip finds Tate in the bunkhouse after Kayce told him to wait there.

Jamie is crying over the sink trying to wash the guilt off of his face.

Beth finds him that way and lays into him with disgust. He never takes the time to think what kind of man am I, but always what does the world think of me.

Morality and loyalty aren't part of the equation for him. But he's finally done something that makes him see himself the way the world does. The way Beth sees him. The way John sees him. No amount of scrubbing is going to change that.

Beth suggests suicide.

Rainwater is at a crime scene. A man from the casino was strangled, but there's blood at the scene. Outside the garage where the man lays can be found his hand driven into an old stump. What Rainwater sees is a message.

Rip is helping Tate with a horse as dad and grandpa ride up. Tate has to speak to his grandfather. It's very serious.

Tate has decided he will be a cowboy. John says that's a good thing since it will all be his someday. Tate says that's a problem since he doesn't have a course. Can he buy him one? Sure, but he's not going to train it or feed it. Tate runs off happily screaming to Kayce that he has to train his horse.

Teal visits Dan to report his liquor license has been yanked. Until next year, they need to confiscate all alcohol on the premises.

Malcolm is waiting for Beth at her office. Jason the assistant isn't the brightest bulb.

Malcolm doesn't consider any part of Montana out of his reach. He's there to tell Beth that he will not have a casino built at the gates of Yellowstone. Malcolm wants the family's help. Beth thinks her father's reputation should warrant a little trust. Malcolm disagrees.

He knows that damming the tributary on the Dutton ranch is the only way the casino can get its power, and he thinks Beth has already done the math on how much money they'll make turning the ranch into the Dutton power company.

Beth goads Malcolm with a chat about her and a church boy when she was a girl. It ends with her comparing Malcolm to that boy's penis. He is not pleased.

Tate is so excited about his pony he's speaking about it as much as Bubba talked about Bubba Gump shrimp.

But, Tate says, to do all that he needs, he'll have to live on the ranch. Monica opens the door. She agrees. She cannot get him out of her mind or her soul. She wants him to forgive her, and he pulls her into an embrace.

Rip and John are in the field. They're discussing what happened to get them there, and Rip doesn't want to make John an accessory. Nothing can make it go away, but there they are anyway.

Jamie is in the field with a rifle. He's taking Beth's advice. John disagrees and wants to pull Jamie off of that thought by assuring him there is still a chance to move forward.

Later, at the house, John talks with Beth. She needs to go easy on her brother. She won't do that. She needs him to set aside whatever it is, but she was told to fight everyone, and even if he doesn't see it yet, Jamie is the person he should be fighting.

Jamie is packing his things. He's moving into the bunkhouse.

Rip treats him with kid gloves as he introduces him to the way of cowboys. Jamie pulls out his cash when they offer to deal him into the poker game. They say whoa! Jamie already has the winning hand.

Instead of being the man who wins the game, Jamie folds, gaining approval from Rip.

John and Beth retire to the parlour. She tells him Malcolm came for a visit and reports that men like him just want to be feared.

He's not getting that, John says, and Beth says maybe not, but he's sure going to try.

Kayce and Monica are making love, and she wants him to look her in the eyes as they do it.

Jamie settles into the bunkhouse, and Rip gets a call from Beth. Come to me, she says. He grabs a chair and joins her on the roof.

He thought she was off of alcohol, but she's swilling right from the bottle. She wants him to take her on a date. With dinner. He says he's too tired to analyze her wants, but he has no idea what it is. He has the money as he's obviously not spending it on clothes.

Rip spent $22 grand on his mother's headstone. Tall and with an etched face. He spent $30k on his brother's with a taller stone so he could be a little closer to heaven. The best money he spent was for $5k on a gravedigger to get his father so he could toss his bones out the window.

She talks about heaven and hell, and she tells him not to say he loves her.

John gives Kayce and Monica the master bedroom. He searches for the TV remote before taking his leave. He goes to what must have been his wife's home away from home as the cabin is filled with her things from photos to clothes in the closet.

Jamie is working hard getting hay off a truck when John, Kayce, and Tate drive up with Tate's new horse.

John has useless words of wisdon for Tate who names his horse Bucky.

Beth and Jason are at the office when a couple of masked thugs arrive. After taunting them, they grab her by the neck, and she starts stabbing with a letter opener. The beating begins. She had time to text Rip who is driving like crazy to get to her. She's no longer answering.

Both held at gunpoint, Beth tries to get Jason not to give them the satisfaction of being scared. They don't need him to be scared, they need her scared. She wishes them luck, and he shoots Jason in the head.

She never stops fighting back, and he begs her to be scared as he prepared to rape her. Just then, Rip arrives, kills the bastard, and Beth collapses. Rip is shot in the gut.

Beth bashes the guy in a skull, and Rip pulls her into his arms. I love you, he says twice.

After Rip calls John, he arrives with the coroner. He has no idea how he's going to keep that quiet. Kayce says it's not a crime, and John knows exactly what it is. Kayce promises to take care of it.

When he gets back to the ranch, Monica wonders where he's been, but he says there were wolves down by the barn. The lying will continue.

Malcolm wakes to find his thugs trussed up in the backyard with a message. Return to Sender.

John wonders if Kayce raised any issues about last night. John is incredulous that Monica could have believed that story and says Kayce has a lot to learn about women.

As for the Beck brothers? Well, they're going to kill them.
