Round Table: "Fight or Flight Response / Losing My Religion"

by at . Comments

On the Season Finale of the Round Table, Burke battles for his relationship (and nervous system), Denny finally breathes his last, Richard grills the interns, and Mer and Der... Get. It. On.

Better example of true love: Izzie/Denny or Mer/Der?

The Truest Love? McCritic: It can't be a coincidence that Mer/Der is starting to sound like the eerie command of a murderer, can it? That duo is killing the concept of true love! Screw rules, forget boundaries, show no restraint, act insane and irrational on occasion, just follow your heart - Izzie and Denny were the portrait of passion and devotion. I wish he hadn't died.

iheartizzie: I heart Izzie. Really. I grew to like Denny, too, and wanted them to grow old together. But sadly, this relationship barely got off the ground. It didn't even get out of bed! So I'm going with the latter couple, as both members are alive. That, and despite my personal loathing of MerDer (flood my inbox with hate mail, fans!), you can't dispute their passion. The yearning in Derek's eyes while dancing revealed how paralyzed he is with love for her.

Married-to-McDreamy: As much as I believe Derek and Meredith love each other and will end up together, I think the love shared between Izzie and Denny was truly the purest form of this emotion. Originally, I felt that these two couldn't possibly know they loved each other, as they never experienced anything together outside of that hospital room. However, my beliefs changed when Denny proposed to her. After watching them interact through the toughest of emotional battles, it became obvious to me that their love was very pure and sweet (Izzie's psychotic outbursts notwithstanding).

Which intern's one-on-one talk with Richard left the most lasting impression?

iheartizzie: Meredith, hands down. Nothing changes the subject and disarms an authority figure quite like discussing an extramarital affair he thought was secret, then blaming him for her own family's crumbling.
Married-to-McDreamy: Definitely Alex's discussion of the football team. Okay, maybe not. I Loyal Dr. Karevwould have to say Meredith's talk left the greatest impression on our stoic chief. The second woman to confront Richard about his affair with Dr. Ellis Grey in one day, Meredith definitely caught him off guard.

McCritic: Alex. The use of an ideal metaphor will pretty much always leave a profound impession on yours truly, but this football foresight was a glimpse into Alex's troubled, bitter soul. He hates his team, but he's loyal to it. That says a lot. We can only hope Terrell Owens was paying attention.

More likely to survive: Dr. Burke's career, or his relationship with Dr. Yang?

Married-to-McDreamy: Unfortunately, I would have to say that his career is most likely over, which is quite sad considering he is the most calm, collected, and talented cardio-thoracic surgeon in Seattle. The scene in which Cristina took his hand at the end was quite moving though, and I believe that Burke will see that she does have a heart... sometimes.

McCritic: Burke is the honorable, admirable, caring yin to Cristina's self-absorbed, cold Dr. Yang. His hand will recover. This is a man who was born to cut people open, to save the world one replaced ventricle at a time. He'll also need the appendage to write a forceful break up email to Cristina.

iheartizzie: Throughout his career, Dr. Burke has been renowned as a surgeon with nerves of steel. Metaphorically speaking. One could even argue he is super-human. He will do what it takes to control his nerves in the literal sense, no matter how much physical theraphy it requires. Then he'll break up with Cristina over her lack of emotional support in his time of need. The nerve of that intern!

Will George ever say "I love you" to Calli?

McCritic: He better. If Calli doesn't hear those magic words some time soon, she'll love breaking every bone in little George's body. Should take her about six seconds.

Married-to-McDreamy: Yes. I believe George will say thoThe Abrasive Dr. Torresse three little words to Calli, but only after she warms up to his "family." We all know that George values his close relationship with his fellow interns and if Calli continues to trash-talk these women, George will never reach Calli's level of adoration.

iheartizzie: George rushing into something is only slightly less likely than him getting a good haircut. He loves Calli, even if he won't admit it to himself, or say it aloud. The guy takes his time with heavy issues, but he'll get there eventually.

The last episode was sad (because of Izzie's situation and Dr. Burke's hand), but I was actually disappointed that Meredith and Derek had sex...I wanted her to give it a try with the vet (Chris O'Donnell)...My friend Carol thinks that Addison is going to hook up with the vet and leave Derek.

I think Cristina's interview with the Chief left the most impression. It gave insight into why she kept running away from Burke and it's shown how much she's change these past two years. I also think both Burke's career and his relationship with Cristina will last. He's way too in love with her to break up with her. Any man who tells you he won't hold a grudge against you if you decide to leave him in his weakest moment because he knows you're not emotionally strong enough to handle it and who accepts all your short comings, is not going anywhere. Somewhere during season 3, I see Burke proposing to Cristina.
I'm really, really glad that Denny died. He took up way too much airtime and Izzie turned into a freaking moron. When I look at Derek and Meredith, I don't see two people who are in love. I see two of the most unlikable lead characters ever. They just suck.

I predict the following...
DR. BURKE will have a long physical therapy process, and in the meantime becomes chief of surgery. His relationship will CRISTINA will be rocky..
DR. WEBBER will retire to be closer to his family.
While Burke is recovering, the doctor from the other hospital fill in for him.
MEREDITH will choose neither guy, but run after Izzie instead. After that, she will have awkward moments wth Finn.
ADDISON will leave Derek. Derek will have to fight for Meredith. (finally)
GEORGE and Calli will continue their little escapade.
IZZIE will take some time to mourn, but will be back. (I hope)
and ALEX, will eventually give up on surgery at seattle grace and move to NY to pursue plastic surgery with McSteamy.

OKAY! THERE WAS A WHOLE LOT GOING ON IN THE FINALE. FIRST AND FOREMOST, WHO'S THE CHEAT NOW. HOW COULD DEREK HAVE SEX WITH MEREDITH WITH THE WHOLE HOSPITAL PRESENT? AND SHAME ON MEREDITH FOR LETTING IT HAPPEN. SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, DEREK STILL HASN'T LEFT HIS WIFE, ADDISON YET AND STILL HASN'T SAID HE WILL. SO MUCH TRAGEDY IN THIS ONE, MAYBE THE ENDING WAS A DREAM SEQUENCE LIKE SOMEONE ELSE MENTIONED ON THE BLOG. THAT WOULD BE COOL TO HAVE IZZIE AND DENNY BACK NEXT SEASON HAPPILY MARRIED. ONE CAN ONLY WISH. I WANT BURKE TO HEAL COMPLETELY AND COME BACK BETTER THAN EVER. I KNOW, I KNOW HE HAS TO GO THOUGH THE EMOTIONS AND THERAPY. DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK HIS RIVAL SURGEON AND CLASSMATE IS COMING ON TO MAYBE THROW A WRENCH IN THE BURKE/CHRISTINA PAIRING?. AND DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE SHOOTER WAS ACTUALLY REVIVED BY CHRISTINA?. I DON'T THINK THEY EVER WENT BACK TO THAT SCENE. I KNOW I'M BEING LONGWINDED BUT THERE'S SO MUCH TO SAY. I THINK WHEN THE CHIEF LOSES HIS NIECE HE'S GOING TO HAVE A BREAKDOWN, IT SEEMS LIKE HE'S MORE OF A FATHER FIGURE TO HER THAN AN UNCLE. WELL I THINK I'M ABOUT DONE WITH MY RANTING.

Wow. What a season. I only wished they could have prolonged the character of Denny and wait to make a decision on whether to keep in involved in the story or not. He could've simply been a secondary character, like Dr. Bailey's husband or the Chief's wife. They're there, we know they're there and we don't have to see them all the time. I absolutely loved the chemistry Denny had with Izzie -- love at first sight, for him. And to watch Izzie grow to love him very deeply was so satisfying ... the one guy who doesn't look at her like the sexy underwear model with big boobs. It tore me to pieces to watch her pleading with him to go along with her plan to get him the heart and her breaking down sobbing in his arms ... even though he had already told her he wasn't going to "steal another man's heart" -- the look on his face, the tears in his eyes, spoke volumes about these characters. The love story was so tender and pure ... with just a few naughty moments ..."can I just see one boob?" Can't wait for this to come out on DVD in September so I can watch Season 2 again and again ... and if I stop it at just the right place, Denny doesn't ever have to die and I can imagine the characters walking off into the sunset to live happily ever after. Hey, it's my dream! LOL

I'm with Lindsay up there... I am NOT an Alex fan (yes, I realize he was FINALLY sweet with the scooping-Izzie-off-the-bed deal, but it doesn't make up for a season of wanting to throw things at the TV every time he came on the screen)... and I'm going to miss Denny big time. I think they could've worked it into the show. I bawled when he died - totally broke my heart. :( Meredith and McDreamy's sleazy sex scene annoyed me. I'm starting to like Addison, and after Denny dying/Izzie's deathbed scene, the McDreamy/McVet decision for Meredith seemed so trite. I know it's all about the cliffhanger, but I wasn't so impressed with that being the closing scene. :P Blah. How long til September?

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Nobody's memory is perfect or complete. We jumble things up. We lose track of time. We are in one place... then another and it all feels like one long, inescapable moment. So, what does it mean? What do we take away? Which pieces will haunt us? Hurt us? End us? Inspire us? It's just like my mother used to say, the carousel never stops turning. You can't get off.
