Cristina's outlook changes after an encounter with a patient who happens to be former nurse. Derek and Meredith, whose personal relationship continues to blossom, treat a construction worker after he somehow survives a freak injury, but whose life may be forever altered.

Cristina: And always, every time, it takes your breath away.
Meredith: There are five stages of grief. They look different on all of us, but there are always five.
Alex: Denial.
Derek: Anger.
Bailey: Bargaining.
Lexie: Depression.
