Shonda Rhimes Previews Return of Grey's Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy returns tonight with "Where The Wild Things Are."

To mark the occasion, a woman who needs no introduction - Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes - has some words for all of you regarding the show's return tonight in her guest column for TV Guide ...

I like to call these five upcoming episodes Grey's Anatomy, Season 4, Part 2. Because for us, for the stories, it really does feel like a whole separate season. I came back to work after the strike with a whole new purpose, a new dedication. And a sense of hope.

My best friend, Oprah... OK, in my head she's my best friend, but in reality she barely knows me. But, secretly, I like to pretend I'm Gayle King because Gayle is the person who makes Oprah laugh, and who doesn't want to be the one to do that?

Also, I secretly wanna be Angelina Jolie. Because of the babies and the Brad and the fabulousness, but I don't have the legs. I lost my point. My point is that Oprah would say I have renewed my spirit. For me, that means I'm starting to enjoy this again.

Really enjoy this. Feel the rich possibilities.

So this season - Grey's Anatomy, Season 4, Part 2 - is the season of hope. For Meredith and Derek. For Izzie. For George. For Bailey. For Callie.

Hopeful things are happening. Meredith and Derek are going to get together for good. That's right. For good. Now, if you think I'm going to tell you how it will happen, you're crazy. 'Cause it is yummy stuff. It is special. I spent a lot of nights lying in bed awake thinking about this.

These characters are my friends. They are people I know well who happen to live inside my head. I worry about their shortcomings and I celebrate their victories and I so, so want them to be happy. But more than happy, I want them to be brave. These Grey's Anatomy episodes are about bravery.

No boats crash, no bombs explode. No one we love dies. But still, Meredith and Derek getting together - how they get together - is about bravery.

Alex is going to have to be brave, too. Because things are coming to a head with the woman we know as Ava/Jane Doe/Rebecca. And when it is over, he's never going to be the same. Cristina's struggling with the loss of Burke and what that means for her surgical career. She's going to do some things we have never seen Cristina Yang do.

Izzie's already been through hell, and she's coming out the other side. George is growing up, becoming the man worthy of having Bailey's son named after him. Callie, Erica and Mark are going to go through some changes that might surprise you. Bailey struggles to fix her marriage.

The Chief makes a play for the woman he loves.

A lot happens in these five episodes. And it all ends with a kiss. A good kiss. A great kiss. A kiss so good it makes us lean into our televisions. A kiss we never saw coming. Oh, it's a major kiss. As Derek would tell us, "I'm all about the kissing. More kissing, I say." It's that kind of a kiss.

I can't tell you who's going to be doing the kissing. That's not how I roll. You'll just have to watch and see.

It would be terrible if George were to leave the show! He's my favorite character. Sure DerMer are fun to watch, but George has more soul and depth than any other character. I agree with him that his character isn't being given the chance to maximize his potential. PLEASE make his part more meaningful and keep him on!!!! On another topic, this Denny thing is getting old. He needs to move on and let Izzie develop her relationship with Alex. Alex is finally growing up after all this time and they are good together.

it all sounds so good! but how will you top this stuff? because i want to see this show for many more seasons!

Great episode tonight!!!! But, once again, I must tell you: I HATE ROSE!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Shonda for letting us know we won't have to see Derek and McPlotDevice as a couple for much longer!!! I soooooo lookin' forward to the MerDer reunion!!!! it's the promo for next episode... many interesting things!!!! Specially for Alex!!! And after seeing that, I also think that the major kiss is btw Callie and Erica.

I think this kiss will be between Erica Hahn and Callie. (And no I don't want this to happen, but it seems likely, especially after next weeks preview.) BTW, where are all the Grey's fans? ...

If the story-line is going where I think it is, my interest in the program is gone. The sissy guy seems to have all the women falling all over him. This is not very realistic and I think the writers must be having trouble. It seems the characters are more interested in going to bed with someone than in taking care of the patients. Not a true representation of hospital life.

:o good news finallly!! i can't wait to watch these episodes!! i am from Peru Latin America vivaaaaaaa hehehe ps.- this it's the best show i've ever watch! more MerDer!!

I think the kiss will be Callie and Erica! I thought it when they rolled into work together in club clothes, and the previews for next week made me think it too. They'd make a great couple. But I'm not sure that can wait until the end of the season so maybe there will be two exciting kisses!

I love Meredith and Derek together! I can't wait. The episode tonight was better than I expected, too. Yay.

i think that Shonda did a beautiful job with this new episode it was the best out of the whole season so far and i know cause i watch each episode over and over again that its sicking anyways what she said about the characters being brave it's so true and that's what the show has been lacking this season that it mad it painful to watch a show that i rooted sense it started from it's series premire on sunday at 10 go down that way but today i saw all of what she was talking about in this article/column in tonight's episode and i know this sounds sort of corny but i have hope in the show again and i can't wait to watch which character becomes brave in their own way this season ***Thank you Shonda***

I really had stopped watching the show as I thought it was getting so stupid. When I heard that Mer and Der were getting back together somehow I tuned in. Afterall they make the show.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
