Gossip Girl Spinoff Postmortem

by at . Comments

Why didn't the Gossip Girl spinoff get picked up? A simple case of other strong pilots out there, and the '80s theme not being fully embraced by network executives.

Here's a little Gossip Girl blurb from EW's Michael Ausiello today. Not much new here, just some scoop on why the spinoff didn't make the cut from a good source:

Q: Why did The CW kill the Gossip Girl spin-off?

A: I'm told the higher-ups never embraced the whole '80s concept. I'm also told the reason CW boss Dawn Ostroff stopped short of declaring the project dead last week was because there's a chance it could be reconceived down the road.

The spin off doesnt interest me all that much. Though I am neutral towards Brittany Snow, I don't find her to be a suitable choice for the character of Lily. The face, the voice, it doesnt really shadow at all the Lily that we know. Furthermore the fact that we already know what happens to Lily, and the main parts of her life (she was a groupie, had multiple marriages, has two/three children, her true love is rufus) I dont really see what else there is to offer

I love young lilly and everything
I hope we will see some more of her earlier life soon.

U know, i don't really care that much for Lily. I think if they were going 2 do spin off that they should put ALL the parents in it. like GG said 'if u think the youth of 2day are bad, you should have seen our parents' or something to that affect. I mainly want 2 see Bart Bass, I find him strangly interesting. I want 2 find out more of his background and all the evil things he did 2 get ahead. I think it would be cool to see how bad the parents of all our fave characters were.

The spin-off is mediocre at best. It doesn't have the same allure as Gossip Girl; it just carries the character of Lily into the past. That's about it. They should focus on Gossip Girl instead of finding other distractions that ruin the planning and storytelling. Which was already evident in season 2.

I completely agree with Corinna. Though I understand it isn't supposed to be a glamorous and 'bright lights' as Gossip Girl, it just didn't...fit. I just can't bring myself to believe that Lily was ever NOT a socialite. Her love interest creeped me out, too:[ haha. But also, I felt that the prom episode should have been, idk, a bigger deal, I guess. I mean, it was the last high school episode we saw, and it seemed like it should have been a milestone. The Blair and Nate break-up seemed forced [don't get me wrong- though I loveee them, I know it was coming eventually]and overall, I felt that the prom itself got the short-end-of-the-stick. The spin-off injection would have been better in the middle of the season, when the events were sort of in limbo- perhaps during Lily's struggles with Rufuf/death of Bart/problems with her mom- NOT during prom/graduation episodes. It took away from the end of the season and the end of high school. Just a few thoughtss:]

I don't like this spin-off. It doesn't fit well to GG. somehow it made the episode before the season finale kind of useless... it won't be better seperated.

Too bad. I am intrigued with L and R's past.

Blair: Fashion is the most powerful art there is. It's movement, design and architecture all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we'd like to be. Just like your scarf suggests that you'd like to sell used cars.
Dan: Vanessa gave me this scarf.
