Grey's Anatomy Season Six Overview

at . Comments

Below is ABC's Season 6 overview of Grey’s Anatomy, posted on the show's official site and as a press release to sum up what the new campaign has in store for us.

It also serves as a recap of last season for those unfamiliar.

Here's the network's brief overview. Tell us what you think, and what you are most excited for as we prepare for the sixth season of Grey's just 25 days from now ...

It seems like the doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital are always fighting for something, from access to cutting-edge surgeries to relationships to patients’ lives.

And they don’t always win.

After a long, hard struggle, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) may have finally won the battle for each other’s hearts, sealing their love for one another with vows written on, of all things, a blue post-it note.

Izzie Crashes

One battle the staff of Seattle Grace may be losing is saving the lives of two of their own, Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight).

And Alex Karev (Justin Chambers, pictured above), Izzie’s new husband, is left holding his breath until next season’s premiere along with the rest of us.

Meanwhile ...

  • Tough-loving Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is fighting her own battles. She faces the very real possibility of losing her husband over her extreme dedication to her career.
  • Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) is fighting relationship fears while on-again-off-again boyfriend Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) fights the emotional scars that he brought home from Iraq.
  • Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) is fighting for her family’s respect as a new relationship with Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) blossoms into the healthy romance she needs.
  • Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) is trying to overcome his past and become a better man - with or without Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). Perhaps Lexie is too young for him after all.
  • Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), The Chief, is fighting to keep his hospital together and to find some way to forgive himself for his past mistakes.

Grey’s Anatomy can be as complicated as any neurosurgery, with episodes that will make you laugh out loud, cry your eyes out and cheer its victories - whether they involve saving a patient’s life or sealing that kiss we’ve all been hungering to witness.

Sophie, Webber can't "hand" Chief of Surgery to Bailey primarily because she isn't through with her residency yet. According to various sites, season 6 (at least the beginning) will pick up where season 5 ended, which means Bailey is still a resident. During season 3 when Bailey was trying to get the clinic up and running, Webber said that it was Bailey in the chief's chair eventually, meaning when she's through residency, when she's had enough experience as an attending, she would be a perfect fit for Chief of Surgery for SGH; keep in mind though when he hold her this, Bailey was still a 4th year general surgery resident. When she became a 5th year general surgery resident in season 4 and 5, Webber was mentoring her to succeed him as the next best general surgeon, not necessarily the very next chief of surgery. Also, the fact that Derek Shepherd has been a SGH-attending for two years now, has years and years of experience, which still trumps Bailey, in terms of experience, whom would be become an first-time attending somewhere in Season 6.

Anuflas, i hope you´re right, because i can´t stand another break up :/

I don't think that MerDer will break up again .. i remember that in one of the spoilers, james pickens tell us that we will see a new side of the chief, so that means he wll retire as a chief and remain as a general surgeon attending ? i guess that's the new side, not the boss side. and derek needs a new storyline when ellen leaves for maternity leave.. srry anyway for my bad english

I don't mind Derek being a temporary chief but when the chief hands over for real, I want it to be Baily. She'd be perfect, plus it kinda seemed like all last season the chief was prepping her to take over from him when he eventually retires.

I'd like the chief's son to be the same age as Meredith. That would mean the son would be the result of a pre Adele fling by the chief, and therefore nothing to do with Ellis or Meredith. Perhaps Lexie could fall for him?
Sill, silly idea, but you never know with GA

I'm wondering if the chief's judgement is questioned by the chairman. The chief is still trying to improve SGH's rating and if the news of the DNR being ignored re Izzie, then the chief may be asked /or ask for a timeout? Derek was appointed last time, so he steps into the breach, but it's temporary? I know we were speculating about a storyline for Der, this could be a biggie but I don't want Der as chief to be the disaster like the disaster that happened when Callie was chief resident! Maybe a chief who doesn't realise a post it is not a marriage certificate is a big'reverbaration'? It would be too much for MerDer to break up again, and I hope Shonda realises that. But Shonda has made mistakes with GA, I just hope someone in her staff reads fan sites and gives her feedback. From what I read after the writers strike, from what Ellen and Patrick said, I don't think that they would want to revisit the off/on MerDer relationship again. I don't particularly like Lex and Sloan together, I think it's too convenient to pair these two up. I know Sloan is at last beginning to grow up, but I hope lex doesn't cave in and give up her ambitions that she said needed to happen before she moves in with Mark. But she needs a new home. I think Alex will struggle with being married, he didn't really ask Izzie, he kinda had the wedding put upon him (for all the best reasons cos it looked like Iz would die). I think George's death will make Iz think 'why wasn't it me?'

@ Nina,
the song is Sink or Swim by Tyrone Wells

I think that Derek says either "You are asking me to take the job" or "Meredith told me to take the job". I think it's the first one but I read on another board that may be the second one. I really think that MerDer are past that crap of triangles and break ups but I see where you're coming of. It would be unrealistic and too much another break up. Like you said, both the fans and the actos are tired of this back and forth so I don't think it's going to sit well with them IF it happens. I wouln't worry about it much. They passed S5, together, engaged, and 'married'. Plus, the article refered to them as 'cohabit blissfully'. That's not a negative 'reverberation'. :) It's somebody else's turn to suffer. A/I are destined for a bumpy road but I think that either L/M (but this one I hope it's permanent) or O/C are going to go through the hell that MerDer went for their happy ending.

here´s what Krista said: The Sept. 7th issue of Us Weekly has a Fall preview and GA is featured. The picture is of A/I. Izzie sitting in the hospital bed and Alex sitting next to her. They are wearing the same clothes as in the finale (5.24) and both have big smiles so it may be more a behind the scenes pic of JC and KH. Where we left off - Derek and Meredith wrote marriage vows, Izzie's cancer nearly bested her and George flatlined. Bye, George - Did you hear? George doesn't make it. "It's going to be sad and painful," executive producer Krista Vernoff tells Us. Love fills the void: Cristina and Owen forge ahead ("The relationship is less fragile," McKidd says); Mark and Lexie are "freaki adorable," says Vernoff; and MerDer cohabit blissfully, though Pompeo's October due date will necessitate a unique plot. And Izzie? Her health is better; her union to Alex not so much. Marrying under duress, says Vernoff, creates "a complicated dynamic." Small blurb on the pic says: All six couples likely won't make it to the end of the season intact, says Vernoff.
soso, maybe the six couple is the the chief/adele?!!!
I just hope merder don´t break up, but after read what Krista said about "All six couples likely won't make it to the end of the season intact" i´m almost sure that merder will break up, that´s the way shonda works
S1- together
S2- they broke up
S3- together then they broke up
S4- they broke up
S5- Together
S6- so in next season they will break up Why this season will be different? The answer is? S6 will not be different we will see again our favorite couple break up, even shonda said last year that Merder 'are together for good for now' and it does not mean necessarily that it will pass S5 or something like that. So we will see another break up or worse we´ll see another crap love triangle. Sometimes i wish GA was like "The office", fans of Jim/Pam will have a baby and a marriage (legal). The writers stoped with stupid stories with break up, we can see now a couple happy building a life together and a family. This is what i want for merder, not another break up or love triangle. We pass this 5 years with back and forth, i think fans and actores are tired of playing this stuff Sorry my pessimism and my english :)

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
