Dexter Producer Dishes on Major Series Death

by at . Comments

Warning: Don't read any further unless you are caught up on last night's stunning Dexter season finale.

Once you've caught your breath from the shocking conclusion to the episode, check out the must-read interview below. Michael Ausiello spoke with Dexter producer Clyde Phillips about the decision to kill off a series regular...

On Rita's demise: The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. It’s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didn’t do as well as we could have. We killed off Jimmy Smits’ character [in the 11th episode] of 12 episodes and then we had to figure out what we were going to do in the 12th episode.

This season, we knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year.

Dexter and Family

Dexter's happy family life took the biggest hit possible at the conclusion to season four. How will the dark passenger respond?

On Rita's possible, Harry-like return as a ghost: The answer, at the moment, is no. However, had you asked me two years ago if Lundy was coming back I would’ve said no. We didn’t know he was coming back until this year. It just seemed expedient to the story — to Dexter’s story and to Deb’s story.

On season five storylines: He is a single father. But, beyond that, we don’t know. We don’t know if there’s going to be what we call “a Big Bad,” like Jimmy Smiths and John Lithgow, or if it’s going to be more individual, stand-alone stories.

Were you happy the show killed off Rita? Where can the show go from here? Where will it go?

So many questions, (unfortunately) so much time to ponder them. Weigh in with a comment today!

my heart was broke when Rita were murdered, trinity didn't suffer enough!!

I didn't care for Rita's character. Her whispery voice made it hard to understand her. Dexter should not be married for obvious reasons. I love the differences of rage and humor in Dexter. My favorite show of all time.

What worrys me for next season is, how will dexter explain why his wife just happened to be a trinity target. She doesnt fit the profile of the bathtub murders. That and Trinity’s family knows what dexter looks like, what to keep them from telling the Feds about his interest in their family and howw he attacked Arthur with a knife in their home. lots to think about…..

We need to remember one thing: Rita did not fit the profile of a bath tub kill by trinity, because she was a mother of two, and mothers were jumpers, in the code of trinity.

When the show was first over I thought it was brilliant. And then the producer says that pretty much the only reason they killed Rita was because they had nothin else to come up with. Kinda lazy, isnt it? Lets not just off people from the show because ya want a big finale. Ugh...well maybe. I didnt like her anyways

I am a big fan of the series and really enjoyed this season but I think the writers should have maybe let Rita live longer, i know they used her death to emphasize Dexter should not stick out of Harry's code and he should have killed Trinity before it came down to this but, there are a few plot holes in Rita's story and her death has left them inconclusive (i.e. the fact that Rita didn't tell Dexter of her first husband), I did not dislike this season finale (i think it was pretty cool) but would of at least liked to see more about Rita's life
About Debra and Dexter's secret, I don't think they plan to make her find out about it right away considering it took her two or three seasons to find out about her mother and also doubt she would tell on him if she does find out about her brother as she relies on him a lot
