Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Spoilers: The Final Season?!

at . Comments

Was last night's season finale of Grey's Anatomy the beginning of the end?

In the wake of the unsettling events of Thursday night, series creator Shonda Rhimes aims to have the end justify the means, as the ABC drama enters what may be the eighth and final season for Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey next fall.

What does she mean by that - and without Mer and Der, could Grey's Anatomy possibly continue? Here's what had Rhimes had to say on this and other topics the morning after the bombshells of "Unaccompanied Minor" were dropped:

Rule Breaker

On whether she's prepared for the backlash from fans, Rhimes tells TV Line:

"I don’t know if I steeled myself for the blowback. I’m sure there’s going to be some, but I’m not even sure I thought about it. I've been busy thinking about setting us up for next season, which might be the final season for the [original cast members]."

"I wanted to spend next season doing nothing but telling stories about the originals, and I felt like in order to do that, we wanted to put everybody in a place where the focus was squarely on Meredith and Derek, Cristina, Alex."

On having Meredith tamper with Derek’s Alzheimer’s drug trial:

"I’ve heard a number of people say, 'I don’t think Meredith would do that.' Meredith is the girl who put her hand on a bomb in a body cavity. Meredith is the girl who tried to help a serial killer kill himself, so that he could donate his organs."

"Meredith - and this is obvious - has a compass that has always led her to shades of grey. She does not believe in black-and-white, she does not believe in good or bad."

"She does what she thinks is right. It’s funny, when we first pitched this storyline to Ellen, the first thing she said before we got to the end was, 'But I give Adele the drug, right? I definitely give Adele the drug [versus the placebo].' We said yeah, because that’s who Meredith is."

"Derek has always been a person who believes in right or wrong, and that has been the fundamental argument of their relationship. I also feel like it’s important to say that Meredith and Derek aren’t getting a divorce; their marriage is in trouble."

On what part of Mer accepts responsibility for pushing Derek away:

"I don’t know. Maybe 50-50? She made a choice but she knew she made a choice. It wasn’t a simple choice to make, but it was the only choice for her to make. As a woman who would tell a gunman to shoot her [in the Season 6 finale], that’s who she is."

"She deals with consequences later. I know that she feels justified, but I also think she knows she made her own bed. He just needs his space."

"The work of his life, which was him basically trying to cure the disease that Meredith eventually will likely suffer from, has been ruined. If he knew about the baby [Zola], things might be different, but he doesn’t."

"Right now he’s just angry and he needs a chance to get over it.

On whether Meredith and Derek are still destined to be together forever:

"I feel like Meredith and Derek are meant to be together forever, and we’re going to make sure in the end they end up together – unless one of them dies or something. I don’t think it undercuts the drama. I think how we get there is the journey.

On whether season eight is it for the cast - and the show:

"It might be the last hurrah for a lot of them; you never know. I really don’t know and I don’t presume to know. Everybody [including Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers and James T. Pickens] has an individual choice to make and I get that."

"It’s been seven really amazing years. Everyone has a choice to make. All the originals are in play."

On whether Cristina will really terminate the pregnancy:

"No one’s ever told me I couldn’t, so it never occurred to me I couldn’t. It is a polarizing issue, and we deal with a lot of polarizing issues. Addison performs abortions on Private Practice all the time, and she’s had one herself."

"Violet has had two herself. I don’t feel like that’s the point. Every woman has her legal, God-given right to choose."

On Cristina and Owen's prognosis:

"I’m still debating what’s going to happen with Cristina and Owen, in my own head. Every day I change my mind about what’s going to happen with them."

On Alex's romantic tribulations:

"I want him to be happy so badly! I really do. It’s so difficult because he’s such the kicked dog a lot of the time, and his character is so tough about it. But you really feel sorry for him. I feel like he hasn’t had any happiness since Izzy.

On whether the Charlie's Angels pilot killed his relationship:

"I love Lucy and I thought Rachael was great; she has such a sparkle to her. If that pilot hadn’t happened, things would be entirely different."

On the climactic Mark-Lexie scene:

"I really like Mark and Lexie together, and I re-edited that scene like 50,000 times. I took it out, I put it back in. The writers and I argued about it for days and days, and it felt like we needed to give Mark some place to go.

"He’s been in baby land this whole season and he needs to step out of Callie and Arizona’s relationship and stand on his own. That’s what we’re trying to do."

I think all the original cast should Continue! We have grown to love them so much! I do know that I would love to see the original cast ( George, Izzy, and Preston) and now Lexi in for a brief time like a rememberance like the present cast having flash backs or something! I think that would be totally cool and then see some parts that we have never seen! And also have Addison and Teddy's husband! I was for sure that was gonna happen but it didn't .. Everyone was just gone. Would love to see what everyone would do if they just had one more day with their loved ones and if they could just see and hold them one more day! As human beings.. We all have that desire and would love to just feel the emotions that these wonderful ppl could play out for us:)

Grey's Anatomy really can't end on season 8..the story is going just fine.though I don't think Lexi should have died, that was just sad.Teddy is great..just wish she can get over her husband's death quick because it cost her her job at the end.Mer/Der should stay together..they understand each other.Zola is good for them.Mer should get pregnant with a boy.that would be super cool.Cristina n Owen are perfect for each other..I mean Owen makes Cristina a better human being. No more abortions for her.Alex deserves some happiness..Lucy was good for him,he wasn't a jerk around her.Jackson is great, though he should tell April he loves her because she's a mess right now.Owen needs to hire her(April) back, she's a great doctor.Chief Webber and Jacksons mother should get together legally, they good together.Dr Bailey is just fine,no problem with her.Torres and Arrizona need a story,as in a deep 1 also.test their relationship a lil.other wise Grey's is the best show

I can't think logically about the next two episodes and usually I can. I can't get my head around the fact that Mer/Der's relationship might end due to PD's contract not being renewed. Their relationship has been the common thread throughout the entire series which I loved. I can't imagine future seasons of GA without the entire original cast especially Meredith, Derek, Christina Alex, Miranda and Richard.

ok season 7 was awsome. the callie arizona drama/hotness was insane. None of the stories this season are really keeping me on edge. I have found myself all season waiting for the tear jerker or the omg I cant wait till next week episode. I love this show above all so please give us something hot or dramatic to go on. And can callie and arizona have any kind of storyline. Your an insane awesome writer. Spice it up I miss it.

OK i dont even know where to start i really want to keep mer and der so bad i think if you take the originals off that will ruin the show...Myself i would QUIT watching it...i think Christina and Owen should divorce the marriage was wrong to begin with she was depressed when they got married...she needs someone like Burke i really wish he would come back i miss him so much he was great...he and christina were perfect for each other and now seems like the perfect time!!!Alex he is just better by himself i think nothing just seems write for him idk what it is hes just an ass but thats the way we like him....I really want Mark and Lexie back together i miss them together...Oh and i think Meredith and Derek should have there own baby...One that is actually theirs she would be awesome prego we love her being everything her mother was not and this would also be great!!!

oh n i hope the treatment works for the chiefs wife coz they all lost so much for it to not work would just be sad! teddy deserves to be happy too i liked seeing her happy with her husband it was like id never seen her happy before.. you neva know maybe her n alex will get together since theyve both lost so much in love they would probably be the perfect couple once they open up about it all.. anticipating a wonderful 8th season but hope its not the last and if it is i hope little grey steps up and takes the limelight or even better.. their other sister join the show now that would open up a whole new can of worms !!

I like all of the characters so much, I think Alex deserves happiness, merideth and derek should fall pregnant too! I cant believe they had all that treatment and practicing making babies and it never worked!! derek should get her to walk down the isle for real! give him some happiness and chistina and owen are great together I like how he is protective of her and looks after her in a unusual way like when he rescued her from the guys when she was being a bar tender reminding her he is her husband not her boyfriend.. he deserves a bit more happiness/affection from her though. I've always liked the storeyline between lexi and mcsteamy but he gave up on her too quick and so did avery i reckon lexi should date some other hottie and make them both jealous!

i have absolutely loved this t.v show and didn't get to watch any of it until a couple of months ago but I have enjoyed cramming in all 7 seasons in preparation for series 8 to air on British t.v. I also got my partner and my sister addicted or should I say the show did. I love all the characters and have shed many a tear over the sadness and the joys that have gone on at Seattle Grey's hospital. I would like to see Izzy come back for Alex and also Dr Burke to come back for Christina. Who doesn't love a happy ending eh?

I'd love to see a spin-off show with Dr. Baily, called Ms. Mom, Dr. Baily! She would be a single mom having an affair with an intern. Just what she always preached to others that she wouldn't put up with and yet finds herself falling down the same path. It would also show her as she struggles with being a single-mom and having a career and trying to have some kind of romantic life. It would show one-hell of a balancing act with Dr. Baily. But if anybody could pull it off, I bet she could. I bet with the chemistry that her and Shonda Rhimes have, it could be an awsome show.

The lesbian story is sooooooooooooo played out, now concentrate on something better in the story. GREAT that they had a baby and all, but it's just getting old. Let someone like Alec meet a good woman and father a child and show us how he can really chance to protect his child. Let Meridith become pregnant right after they get awarded permanent custody of Zola. No more abortions for Christina. Either let her have a baby or stop getting pregnant. She is the most fertile woman on the planet. I think that Jackson's character could be played more into things. He's HOT!!!!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
