Shonda Rhimes Speaks on Grey's Anatomy Storylines, Scenarios

at . Comments

The season finale of Grey's Anatomy left things in flux at best, in a state of disrepair at worst. When the upcoming eighth season picks up five days later, many questions will remain.

Rest assured, Shonda Rhimes is here to answer them. Or at least tease us.

Below are some excerpts from her recent chat with TV Guide:

Best Friends on Grey's

On the theme of Season 8: "This is our last year as residents for Meredith, Cristina, Alex, Jackson and April. It feels like it's a new beginning in a lot of ways."

On how contract situations influence storylines: "I usually start planning my seasons [by planning the last scene first]. This year, we just don't know."

"I pitched eight different scenarios for the end of this season, but we don't know which ones we are writing to. So right now, we're concentrating primarily on the first half, then we're going to concentrate on the second half as a separate shock."

On whether any of those eight scenarios involves a series finale: "I don't decide when the show ends, but I can't imagine that that's going to be true."

On Alex: "We're going to watch Alex both grow up and backslide a little bit. I think he starts off in a real bad place, like really behind and nobody likes him."

On Meredith: "What Meredith did has real ramifications for her job and for her relationship, both in her personal and her work relationship with Derek."

On her marriage: "It's not really about Meredith and Derek breaking up forever. I think people's marriages get screwed up. People have to work to fix them."

"They'll struggle. They're grown-ups, and what's nice about this is that it's about more than that now. They have a child and they're in a more mature place."

On Cristina's pregnancy and her previous pregnancy: "What we liked about that, and what I felt really strongly about that, is that Cristina (Sandra Oh) has always had a certain stance in how she feels about having kids."

"That stance doesn't simply change just because she's married and in love with Owen. I think that there's something interesting when someone absolutely doesn't want children. I find her to be a very interesting character."

"People get vilified for that in our society and I think it's really unfair because I feel like if someone doesn't want a kid, they shouldn't have to have one."

On April and Sarah Drew's pregnancy: "April Kepner is a virgin and we'd have to work really fast to get April unvirginized, pregnant and having a baby. That feels a little insane, so I don't think we want to speed that story up."

Ah, I'm not really excited about Grey's Anatomy now.

@April, that is a possible outcome of the Cristina storyline, but Shonda said in another interview that Cristina's decision is "pretty much set in stone" by the end of the premiere, and if she chooses to keep the baby but give it up for adoption, that leaves LOTS of room for twists in the coming months and isn't very set in stone. We'll just have to see what ends up happening...I'd love to see the show take a risk and further develop that kind of character typically vilified in our society that Shonda is talking about.

Thank you Shonda Rhymes! Society does vilify women who do not want children and I'm tired of it. My husband and I do not want children, that doesn't mean we don't like children, it just means that we don't want them as part of our intimate lives. I'm not advocating abortion either. I'm just saying that parenthood is not for everyone and that should be okay. The world is over-populated as it is and more people should consider adoption. Which brings me to what I think will happen with Critina. I think she will elect to see the pregnancy through but she'll give the baby up for adoption. This will probably tear apart her marriage with Owen and I'm honestly okay with that, I'm not a huge Dr. Hunt fan.
Mer/Der, ya I don't see them working things out right away but I have confidence that they will. They're in it for the long haul no matter what mean things Derek says (he is often not very McDreamy and it's really getting on my nerves).
I want good things for Alex! He deserves to be happy and all of the women he's loved have left him. All of them. He rarely does the leaving. Also, I was watching Season...2 maybe, the other day and Alex was being brutally honest with a patient and Burke got really upset with him. Alex said, I'm honest, I tell the truth, it's what I've got going for me. With that in mind it's not surprising to me that he told on Meredith. It's unfortunate and makes me sad but I'm not surprised.
Maybe it's because we share a name but April is starting to grow on me. I REALLY didn't like her at first and did not like sharing a name but I think she's becoming a solid character so yay :)
Honestly, I don't really care about the Lexie/Mark/Jackson. It's kind of boring.

i would love to see Cristina being a mother it would be really funny.Owen fucked up big time, still i don't think they should break up, i mean i would love to see Cristina singing Like a Virgin again but they r good for eachother :) and Merder...i am excited to see them raising their baby, they'll get back 2gether soon :D

I'm with the others who think Cristina should just follow her own heart on this one. Owen is done as far as I'm concerned. Meredith and Derek will work things out (after all they've been through? please!) and Alex will somehow redeem himself--he always does. The only thing I'm truly nervous about is the Cristina storyline...I could see lots of pull for her to go ahead and have the baby in order to "grow," but I'm totally uninterested that kind of storyline. There are plenty of other ways to grow that don't involve having children you don't even want. Hopefully Shonda is with us on this.

What about calzona and i hope lexie gets back with mark so he not in calzonas face olny for sophia

Cristina should have the baby. If she doesn't think she'll be a good mother then Owen will be the better parent. I don't think she should kill an innocent, helpless little baby who didn't even get the chance to fight in the world. If she's not going to keep it, then she should just put the baby up for adoption.

@Lance: I'm with you 100% on that! :D

Mark and Lexie need to get back together. Jackson can fall into the sinkhole! Meredith and Derek need to get fixed up fast!Zola it's to cute to go through a divorce that young! April neads to be perkier! I like her (call me crazy i don't care!)
I don't think Cristina will have the guts to get rid of the baby, or at least do it without regrets! Alex...i don't know set him up with April since you all seem to hate them both! They'll torture each other. And Jackson can die alone...i hate him!
Calzona= only if Sofia is with them! She's got my name or at least the name i usually use the most since my first one is too comum (in my class there's four of us counting with me...we used to be five...)anyway she's freaking cute!
The other characters...god how many are they besides the fourteen main?! Just make something up! More Bailey rants!
And here's how to fix last season's mistakes!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."
