Ellen Pompeo Open to Grey's Anatomy Return

by at . Comments

Contrary to previous statements she's made - including that she believed she would "finish the show when my contract is up" - Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo says she may stay on after this season.

If the network and producers will have her, of course.

"I was invited for eight years - that was my contract - and no one has asked me for a day more," she says. "I know [creator] Shonda Rhimes has said the show will continue, but I wouldn't presume that they want to continue with me. You don't get dressed for the party if you don't have an invitation."

Rule Breaker

Assuming ABC does ask her back, though, would Ellen be up for it?

"I would love the opportunity to discuss it," she tells TV Guide. "I would never turn up my nose at Grey's Anatomy."

"As long as the stories are honest and truthful, and Patrick [Dempsey] and I feel that there is still material for us to be passionate about, it still beats a 9-to-5 job any day."

"If the fans want us to keep going, then I would continue because we owe them everything."

She's not speaking for Patrick Dempsey, who has also indicated that he will exit next spring, along with Sandra Oh. Surprisingly, Ellen says it wouldn't necessarily deter her from continuing Meredith's story, however.

"I have been blessed to work beside Sandra Oh for the past eight years; she's an incredible talent," says Ellen, who feels the same way about "all the original cast members who aren't there anymore - T.R. [Knight], Isaiah [Washington], Katie [Heigl]. I didn't think the show could go on without any of them, yet we found a way to do it."

"It might be an interesting story for Meredith to have to deal with losing Cristina."

Shonda Rhimes says she has indeed "thought of some scenarios" should Patrick choose to leave while Ellen remains, but is unsure how to end the upcoming eighth season.

"I would be lying if I didn't say that I lie awake at night wondering what would happen," she says. "I have some ideas. Do I love them? I don't know yet. I'd prefer to think of them as Armageddon scenarios. There are no easy answers."

Would you watch Grey's Anatomy without Meredith and/or Derek and/or Cristina?

Tell us what you predict will happen and how you think it would shape the show.

I've been watching this show since day one. brought every single dvd. honestly, I can't go a day without watching an episode (season 3 episodes are LOVE). ANYWAY. Will I watch the show without MerDer & Christina? Yeah. I've grown to actually like some of the new cast. Well, Callie, Arizona, Lexie, & Mark (yeah, he's not new .. but he's also not leaving). Should I have to watch a season without MerDer & Christina. No =/ But its not my life. I'd still watch, but i'll be mildly depressed. I live for those wonderful Meredith & Christina moments. KEEP THE ORIGINAL CAST ALIVE! .. oh, and more MerDer elevator scenes. woot.

ok i have been watching this programme since it stardted and frankly i'm a die hard fan, i hated when we lost Izzie/George (but looking back its better that we lost both because they had a lot of scenes together and they didnt get a chance to ruin my memory of them) , Christina/burke (didn't care so much because still had Christina/Mer), but there were enough of the great original relationships for the show to carry on! So lets map it out who has scenes together now... Owen/christina, Teddy/ and whats his face, Christina/Mer, Mer/der
, bailey/cheif (& Eli), aLex/blonde chick/randoms, Lexie/Mcsteamy/
Callie/and her gf (can't remeber name right now. ok so...Teddy stories not that exciting, Callie stories kinda depressing, Owen stories not good not bad, April stories don't care, Jackson stories i can't even think of any worth mentioning, the cheif stories can be great with the originals because there is a history there for me (he's like a father figure)but not so great otherwise. So If you take out christina derek and mer - all i have to look forward to are Alex's oneliners, bailey's rants (not as often) and Lexie (i quite like her acting) - but that is NOT a good enough reason to keep watching the show for an hour!

Okay, I could never have imagined that i'd be saying this, because I am like the biggest FAN of Grey's but, maybe it's just the time to end the show. Seriously, think about season 1-2-3 even 5 and 6 and what you've felt while watching. Do you feel it now? You know, all the "seriously" and "mc" thing and more. I don't think it would be interesting even if they kept the "seriously" thing. I wanted the show to air for EVER. But, it lost it's soul. Bailey going crazy in every episode? Meredith still not knowing what to do. Even that interesting christina character is getting boring. All I hope is, a really really good FÄ°NALE. Better than season 3, better than season 6. And even better than SEASON 6. FÄ°NALE! Can you imagine a finale with the old characthers back? JUST FOR AN EPÄ°SODE. Can you imagine seeing Ä°zzie in the hospital again? Can you imagine they remembering George with NEW memories? And even Burke and Denny are back? For such a finale episode i would die! And Grey's would be unforgettible for EVER. Just saying. LOL

I don´t think I would continue watching if Meredith, Derek or Christina left the show. They are the best characters by far!

I don't want any of them to leave, but bhe greatest strength of this show is how it develops ALL of it's characters. It would be tough to see the Meredith and Christina dynamic go away and would be heartbreaking to lose Derek, but the show isn't just about them anymore! Characters have come and gone and Shonda Rhimes has made us fall in love with every one of them. Heck, I don't think anyone liked Addison when she first showed up but after two seasons we loved her as much as any member of the regular cast and she ended up with her own show! So even if one or all of those three main characters left, we still have Bailey, Alex, Chief Webber, Callie & Arizona, Mark, Lexie(whose character deserves a happy ending), Owen, Teddy, April, and Avery, all of whom I care about just as much as I do Meredith, Derek, and Christina. I will continue watching no matter what happens.

I want all the characters To stay! I Love them! it wouldn't be a show without seeing the same faces.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
