Once Upon a Time Review: Going Mad

by at . Comments

I've never been a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland. I think it's something about a world where the rules make no sense that I don't like. It feels like being the one sane person in an asylum. Eventually it will drive you mad.

So after last week's "Heart of Darkness," I didn't expect to enjoy "Hat Trick" as much as I did. Jefferson's plight absolutely broke my heart. In the fairy tale world, I knew the Evil Queen was eventually going to do him wrong, I just didn't imagine that she'd do it with such fervor.

Sebastian Stan on Once Upon a Time

When I saw the Evil Queen as the ugly old merchant, I wondered if that's what she looked like when she fed Snow White the apple and if that's what she'll eventually be. You know how your mother told you if you made that face too long it would stay that way? Perhaps that's Regina's future.

As soon as I heard that once the hat let two people into Wonderland it would only let two people out, I knew Jefferson was stuck. What I didn't expect was that the Evil Queen would be so unapologetic about it. She basically told Jefferson his daughter being orphaned was all his own fault. She was just downright... evil.

Back in Storybrooke, the big surprise was that Jefferson knew about the curse. He knew about the fairy tale world and that Emma was the key to the curse. Was it because he was half insane? Will the group that believes grow larger?

As Jefferson argued with Emma he made some good points. We live in a world where everyone yearns for an almost magical solution but no one is willing to believe in magic. That's certainly a conundrum and it's part of the reason we all love Once Upon a Time. As much as the real world tells us otherwise, there's a part of us all that wants to believe in magic.

And as much as I loved Emma getting back to her roots and kicking a little ass as she battled Jefferson, my favorite moment was Mary Margaret punting him through the window. Looks like she's retained a little more of our spunky Snow White than I expected.

In one of the great Once Upon a Time quotes, even Emma noticed:

By the way, have you been taking kick boxing and not telling me about it? | permalink

Even if Emma wasn't ready to admit that there might be something to this story about the curse, she was accepting that there's a connection between her and Mary Margaret. She even referred to her as family. For someone who has never had any, that was a big deal.

That Regina obviously expected Mary Margaret to be gone wasn't a surprise, but the fact that Mr. Gold was in on it was. Why is he working with Regina and what's in this for him?

So, is Mr. Gold playing both sides or is he really out to see Mary Margaret head to prison? Is Emma starting to believe in magic? And if other characters begin to remember both worlds, could it actually drive them mad?

This was a wonderful episode. I love it when OUAT makes me love something that I have spent a long time absolutely despising (like Alice in Wonderland and The Mad Hatter). Jefferson's story was heart-breaking. Even more so because he had memories of the fairytale world and had to live with the knowledge of what he had lost every day of his life. No wonder he's crazy. But it makes me so happy that he made Emma come closer to believing in magic/the truth. I have a feeling that when Emma is finally willing to take the step and believe, things will start to change in a more drastic way than the have so far.

i don'y know what Mr. gold is up too but it makes you think whos side is he on. and i think jefferson went through the hat and that Emma is really start to beleve. I am looking forwad to he next eppsoide. I also think the evil Queen will get hers in the long run also this goes to Virg: it's fariy tale they alway have twist and turns but if you don't like thats your fault

Two thoughts on last nights episode...(1) I think that the "Queen of Hearts" will end of being Regina/Evil Queen mother. (2) I definitely think Emma's hat worked for Sebastian/Maddhatter and he's now back in the fairytale world.

So who knows about magic now?:
Henry, Mr. Gold, Mayor & now Mad Hatter.
plus Snow & Emma who only sometimes believe?
Also I think Madhatter escaped into his hat! DEF!!
I alos think Mr. Gold is playing the Queen. He hates her. ALSO- Mr Gold/Rumple = THE FREAKING BEST!

This was my favorite episode so far for some unknown to me reason. For Regina telling Hatter it was all about family was a tell in a way to me and that is why Emma was able to grab Mary. Mr Gold is for Mr Gold and if it works to his advantage to help Emma he will. He is one of the few people who I believe Regina cannot truly harm in the way she can harm others.
Henry was so pleased when Emma asked for his book he had a real extra bounce as he headed into school...... Virg/I would suggest perhaps viewing online from the beginning if you want to play catch up..... I am one of these oddities when it comes to watching stories such as this play out/not everything has to tie together for me and if there may be a hole or two and I cannot ask Alice I simply chalk it up to the ole fairy tale thing...........

Mr. Gold's loyalty is firm and unquestionable. He answers to one person only: himself.

Virg: if you haven't watched it from the beginning you will never fully understand..............if you seriously are interested don't watch any more but rather wait until season 1 is out on DVD. Watch from the beginning and then you will be hook!!!

It appeared (to me), that the Queen of Hearts vault that Evil Queen retreived the box that her father Henry was in, was the same vault that Graham and Emma entered and where Regina retrieved Graham's/the Huntman heart and crushed it(didn't Regina say it was her fathers tomb?)......if this is the same vault it will be interesting to find out how Regina/Evil Queen abtained it from the Queen of Hearts........
