Chyler Leigh Issues Statement on Grey's Anatomy Exit

According to TV Fanatics, it was the most heartbreaking season finale death of them all. By far.

And now Chyler Leigh has spoken out for the first time about her emotional exit, which took place on the Grey's Anatomy Season 8 finale and still has fans reeling.

Meant to Be

"Earlier this year, I made the decision that season eight would be my last on Grey's Anatomy," the actress said in a statement released to multiple media outlets.

"I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie's story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on Grey's Anatomy is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey."

Leigh's words echo those of Rhimes, who Tweeted not long after the finale aired:

"I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my Grey's family. This was not an easy decision.

"But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future."

I love Lexie Grey/ Chyler Leigh.. it was hard to watch her die but after her statement, i feel some closure..
It did confuse me that at the beginning of the season she said if ever ellen didnt' renew she'd be the leading grey..
We should respect her decision and hope to see her again in her future project.

I will always miss little grey, and every time I watch GA, i will remember what Chyler brought to this show and her character. She will be missed dearly by fans and I wish her all the best in future projects :)x

I miss u like crazy Lexie, I sound like a loon but I blame Chyler on that as she make me love tv fiction character so much, why u have to be so great on what u doing? If Lexie was playing by stoick one dimensional zombie I wouldn't love her so much and I probably rooting for her death. Anyway as I love Chyler as much as I love Lexie, I'll let u go for now and I give u my blessing as I can't wait to be obsess on your future character.

Last year after season 8 started, she stated "I'm not going anywhere". So I don't understand how she just changed her mind "earlier this year". I still think much more is going on than Chyler and Shonda are stating. I don't wanna know if Chyler's personal issues, but killing her off instead of writing her off just seemed stupid. I'm just wondering of Capshaw and Dane are next, because their "journey will come to an end" and if they both and Shonda came to that "decision".

I cant believe shes gone! I loved her character and was completely rooting for Mark and her to get back together!! Ahh well..... Im glad she has released a statement to all her fans and hope to see her on our screens again soon :)

Same here @AiLing...wish Chyler the best life to has to offer. I'm glad she issued a statement to give closure to many fans x

Oh FINALLY!!! I feel a great sense of closure here. Chyler, I love you and Lexie Grey, and I hope to watch you in future projects soon!! :) Wishing you all the best in your future undertakings.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Lexie: [narrating] Grief may be a thing we all have in common, but it looks different on everyone.
Mark: It isn't just death we have to grieve. It's life. It's loss. It's change.
Alex: And when we wonder why it has to suck so much sometimes, has to hurt so bad. The thing we gotta try to remember is that it can turn on a dime.
Izzie: That's how you stay alive. When it hurts so much you can't breathe, that's how you survive.
Derek: By remembering that one day, somehow, impossibly, you won't feel this way. It won't hurt this much.
Bailey: Grief comes in its own time for everyone, in its own way.
Owen: So the best we can do, the best anyone can do, is try for honesty.
Meredith: The really crappy thing, the very worst part of grief is that you can't control it.
Arizona: The best we can do is try to let ourselves feel it when it comes.
Callie: And let it go when we can.
Meredith: The very worst part is that the minute you think you're past it, it starts all over again.
Cristina: And always, every time, it takes your breath away.
Meredith: There are five stages of grief. They look different on all of us, but there are always five.
Alex: Denial.
Derek: Anger.
Bailey: Bargaining.
Lexie: Depression.
Richard: Acceptance.
