Freddie Highmore Cast as Norman in Bates Motel

Freddie Highmore has scared himself up the lead male role in Bates Motel.

The young actor (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) will come on board the upcoming A&E pilot as Norman Bates, the son of Norma (recently cast Vera Farmiga) who eventually turns into a serial killer.

TV Guide Magazine first reported this casting scoop.

Bates Motel will premiere in 2013 and chronicle the relationship of troubled mother and son, revealing their backstory and how they ended up in the situation at the center of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 horror movie.

Anthony Perkins originated the role of Norman in that movie.
