Last Resort Review: Just Crazy Enough

at . Comments

Last Resort is the must-see show of the fall season. The premiere - "Captain," as opposed to "Pilot," get it?!? - is smart, suspenseful and exhilarating from start to finish.

When the crew of the U.S.S. Colorado gets orders to fire their nuclear missiles on Pakistan, Captain Marcus Chaplin balks. Why? Because those orders came through a back channel that should only be utilized if Washington D.C. has been blown off the map. Because the sub is still getting a live feed of Hannah Montana instead of viewing a country at war, the orders smell fishy.

But when Chaplin asks for additional authorization, not only is he relieved of command, the unthinkable happens: Another U.S. warship fires upon them, sending the sub on a frantic dive to the bottom of the sea.

And that's just the first 15 minutes of Last Resort.

This show is filled with political intrigue and epic adventure on a cinematic scale. Whether it's the close quarters of the submarine - where the intense pressure of their steep dive sends bolts flying like bullets - or the tropical island with a Nato station and a band of unhappy locals, the visuals are stunning.

Andre Braugher gives us a superior performance as Capt. Marcus Chaplin. He's a man pushed to the edge, whose mission is to protect crew and country, but he's not your standard hero.

Chaplin takes over an island and fires his own missiles on Washington D.C. to prove his point. He needs whomever is in charge to believe he's just crazy enough to do it. The real question: how crazy is he? Is he the brains behind solving this massive conspiracy to start a world war or is he really borderline insane? As he says in this Last Resort quote...

Test us and we will all burn together. You've been warned. | permalink

The rest of the cast also gives us something to look forward to. Scott Speedman as XO Sam Kendall is Chaplin's loyal right hand man, but even he may question how far his Captain is willing to go and whether their end goal is the same.

Autumn Reeser is Kylie Sinclair. Essentially Kylie is our eyes back in Washington. She's got a prototype on the U.S.S. Colorado that blocks the sub's magnetic signature and she doesn't want her chance at a government contract scrapped by this massive military snafu. Although her immediate motives are selfish, she may be the one to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy.

The cast is sprawling and larger than is possible to recap in this review, but everyone... from the island locals unhappy with this new occupying force... to the sub's crew... to the mysterious SEAL team who may know more about how this debacle started than they're willing to say... are all entertaining and certainly piqued my interest.

I'm unsure whether the ultimate question of Last Resort will be who dun-it? as much as what comes next? but I know I want answers to both questions.  And how long can Chaplin hold off a military superpower from overthrowing his tiny island domain?

Will Chaplin decide his fight is simply to hold off the powers that be and start a new life rather than find answers and clear his name? Will his crew, many who question his authority already, follow him or try to usurp his tenuous control. Will anyone see or believe that video?

Last Resort is better than any action movie I saw this summer.  The pilot has already ratcheted up the tension to a fevered pitch and I will definitely be tuning in to find out what comes next. How about you?

I gave it a couple of tries. Just two much of a jumbled mess for me. Look up the description of overacting.

This has pushed THE BIG BANG THEORY off my Must See List and taken its place. TBBT is now on replay status. Very exciting premiere episode! Look forward to watching how this plays out. However, it's seems clear to me where our loyalties are supposed to lie when you show Big Bad D.C. feds interrogating Cinderella! (Jessie Schram played Cinderella on ONCE UPON A TIME earlier this year.) BOO! Also, it was my impression that Chaplin's video was broadcast on news networks. We see it playing on the tv in Kylie Sinclair's home when she walks inside, and she even watches it for a moment before seeing the Admiral enter.

(Pt 2) ...of anti CO antics, the NATO station, and the prototype on board (where was it) they probably have enough situations to keep it going....just don't go off into left field like Lost and lose everyone's interest! Great Cast and Writers...keep up the good work. Great review, Christine!

Great new show and the best pilot so far this season. As a Navy family of 45 years, I too, picked apart the uh-oh's (like a full-bird Captain as CO of a sub), but felt it all panned out in the end after watching a truly well-written drama! Riviting to the end! We felt it would have been better as a movie (no commercials) and wondered if it could go the entire season, but throw in the questionable SEALS (Marines?) and the last mission, the island locals and their now sub hostages, the Chief of the Boat (always the bad guy in the Unit and NCIS) and his small band of

The pilot was riveting! I hope they can keep up the pace. First TV show in some time that I've been excited about. Tom Clancy caliber. And to the critics who claim to have served on boomers, nobody wants to watch a realistic show about submarine ops unless they are looking for a sedative. I served in the field artillery, army, and a realistic show about day to day artillery ops would certainly put me to sleep (had to fight the drowsies often enough even with all the noise).

I think this show had a lot of suspense and action, very entertaining, the unrealistic thing isn't the idea of a phoney war being started but its the idea of a man in Captain Chaplain's position of power to have such a strong moral compass to stand up for something so abhorrently wrong. Also Walter, i think its important to remember that the movie in its nature from what i hear is inflammatory and it has done exactly what it set out to do, i see the people that made the movie inciting so much anger across the muslim world and people like Pamela Gellar no different to Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian, in the sense that their actions are just those of people trying to seek attention, and when we do give them this attention they are winning. Sorry to go off point.

Loved the show. Hated the commercial interruptions. If ever there was a program that should have limited commercial interruptions this was it. Every time the tension was ratcheted up, the spell was broken by a dumb ad. This would be better if it appeared on Showtime or Cinemax.

i liked the premire as ive been waiting all summer and it didnt dissapoint! but i am going to say that if they have the hot right hand man cheat on his wife back at home with one of those multipule women on board (r there that many women at sea?) that ill quit watching. i want this to be a goood show, one with action and drama of the war not drama cause somebody cant keep there pants zipped up. question though cause i did miss part of it, what did the guy that was drinking himself stupid mean when he said it was all his fault?? i came in when he was talking to the lord of the island and didnt know if i liked him but felt really bad for him in that scene and now im curious. and i swear i wanted to deck all those military whoevers coming in a ripping the phones outta the wife and fathers hands!

I really liked the premiere and it introduced the regulars and the premise seemlessly. However, I kept asking myself how the writers will be able to sustain this type of show for an entire year - let alone more than 2. Will the sub become a permanent resident on the island with conflicts swirling around them with the locals and/or Washington? Or, will it turn into a Gilligan's Island? I'm a huge Tom Clancy fan and Last Resort certainly has a lot of promise and my attention. I hope its writers will be able to support it all the way - sort of like how superb the writing has been for best new drama of last year, Person of Interest. I'll be rooting from the sidelines!

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. The Captain (Andre) is terrific!

We aren't actually at war. Just make him realize how incredibly dead he'd be if we were.
