The survivors are all there, though. Click to enlarge the new cast pictures below ...

And my theory is that Kepner won't be a GS-attending; it's far more likely that she'll be a trauma surgical fellow working in Hunt's department.

In the real world, board certs, although voluntary, are essential to be hired at top-tier hospitals and medical centers. There is a certain suspension of disbelief when it comes with GA. It's the same thing when the Chief allowed George to re-take the intern exam.

Kepner was planning on re-taking the boards because her contract wasn't renewing. It was only after she got back to Iowa, three months later, that Hunt offered her a job. She'll most likely take the boards again off-screen come next year so she can be board-certified.

Plus, ABS is public record. You can look up if your doctor is board-certified, and generally, you'd have to question why an attending surgeon/physician isn't and you'll most likely not choose them to treat you.

If the boards aren't essential, why would Kepner need to think she'll retake them next year? She's got a job anyway. SGH has three general surgeons, it doesn't make sense for Kepner to be one too. Hunt regards Kepner as the person he let down, so she's surely got to be his protege again.?
Alex has foresaken his fellowship now at Hopkins now.

It's weird seeing them all in navy, attending scrubs! Can't wait to see everyone back together at SGMWH!

Just like Hopkins created a fellowship position for Alex, Hunt, as Chief, could create a trauma surg fellowship as well, especially since trauma is still his department.

Regarding Alex, the job was created for him specifically. If he didn't take it, the peds fellowship program at Hopkins would have been just the fellows they initially hired.

Certification by the ABS is voluntary. Most surgeons who want to work at reputable hospitals as attendings or fellows get board certification in their residencies because reputable hospitals tend to use that as a prerequisite.

It's up to the hospital's discretion whether or not they hire an attending or fellow without a board-cert. Doesn't mean they're 'unqualified' per se; you can still practice medicine and/or surgery without one, but it's difficult to get a position without it.

Navy scrubs doesn't mean attending status per se; yes all the former residents do hold general surgery attending status in terms of hierarchy, but due to them being fellows, they don't have the title of attendings in their respective specialties, with the exception of Mer as she's chosen general surgery. Yang, Karev, Avery, are all surgical fellows in cardio, peds, and plastics, respectively.

April on the other hand, is a toss-up. Yes, she's wearing navy scrubs, but she either became a general surgery attending, which is unlikely, or Hunt created a trauma surgical fellowship for her.

Why hasn't Lexie gotten a funeral? It's like she died and no one seems to care, even Meredith. Wtf?

Seriously? You need to remind us all of the fact that we lost so many people? Thanks Shonda. But actually I didn't need a reminder.
Please TVFanatic don't put this as the picture of they Grey's Anatomy page. The old one looks so much better.
