Man. I couldn't figure out if there would even be a third season. Lily was so much of the story...the hope for the future in the story. Killing her off?!!! Man.

I'm still can believe they killed off Lily. Bohannon had a chance with her to fight his all consuming need for revenge, now he just goes back to the same character as before. But now he has two people to get revenger for. I'm not sure if I want to continue watching, it would have made more since if Sean killed Ruth, not Lily getting killed.

... end this season. He just spun wildly around causing havoc with no endgame in mind, quite a departure from his calculated ways in the first season. Then there is Lilly. The only damned character to see any real development while staying true to her own character. She's on the verge of a very interestin possibility, running the railroad her way, but then she gets killed off just to prove the Swede is really really crazy. They even took the piss out of the Sioux. All the tension of a final conflict and they're sent running tails between their legs. A raid would of been better, kidnapping Eva would've given Elam something to do next season. But they came in force and lost doing just enough damage to ensure the railroad is going to be swimming in professional soldiers from now on making further native issues moot.
I know the writers wanted to throw out the rulebook for storytelling but there is a reason we like clichés and characters getting better, it's just more satisfying.

This whole season was awful. They took the piss out of the interesting characters from season one and either killed them off or wrote them out. This season was all about chatacter devolution. The Reverend was a superstar in the first season. We really needed the peacemaker this season so lets make him drunk and useless then kill him of in some pointless stunt. Joseph? What a waste. He leaves his tribe only to be crushed by his mentor's uselessness. Now he just scampers back home. Elam turned into a shitbag for almost the whole season and just happened to mellow out a bit at the end. Durant got shot and developed an opium addiction but is still the same ass he's always been. Bohannon was neutered this season. He started off an outlaw, albeit a bitchy one. Then he became Durant's good little drone. And he still hasnt resolved his revenge for his wife. His only interesting interactons were with the Swede and Lily. The Swede was always a little odd but he went way off the deep

Killing Lilly off??????? You have lost me as a viewer unless she returns. The other characters without her are just not worth the viewing time.

This is writing at its best. Look at how the writers skillfully brought everyone to actually care for the characters. Although I am sad about Lily, I think the writers needed to stir an outrage among people to show AMC that the show is successful and needs to comeback for a third season. Hopefully, they somehow work her back into Season3 if there is any.

Lily is in a coma! The Indian comes to the church to pay his respects and notices this. His indian magic gets her back to life. The Swede is again impotent! YES

BRing Lily back...Maybe the Indian visits the church and notices that she is in fact alive and his indian magic can bring her back...a great way to get back at the swede and make him impotent !

To the poster ch, Cullen is not "impotent romantically." His romance with Lily added depth to him. And with that depth, he was mostly still the same gun-toting badass.

Diddo!!! Bring Lily back! Please AMC!! She is a top tier character in the show and she and Cullen definitely needed to build their relationship further. I feel the writer's did a disservice to the show. I think it will be hard to watch season 3 if they don't write Lily's character back into the script. Come on AMC!!!

I did not see Season 1. I saw this advertised w/Into the West Mini series (which was fabulous BTW!)& I started to watch it so I did see this Season 2 & I, too, was appalled that they killed Lily! Reminded me of BBCA's Robin Hood series when they killed off maid Marion & that was the end of that series!
I will watch Season 3, (if there is season 3), regardless but I hope, against hope that they find some way to bring Lily back!

How daRE you kill Lilly. The Durants going to jail? Mrs Durant was a waste of script. O'Toole died to soon.Please keep Swede charater floating into the black hole. Elam and Cullan will have to carry the show, they need Lilly. I watch this season for this, my grand baby could have done better. AMC need better writters. This season finale SUCKED. WILL NOT BE WASTING MY TIME NEXT SEASON. What were you guys thinking.Oops you weren't. What a waste of viewers time. Hell on Wheels you lost a wheel.

I guess Anson, although handsome, is doing the same lines over and over. Like thé writers couldnt figure what to do w/ thier relationship. Must be contract negotiations cause it is a good show and this season is a lot of foundation work. Ansons' character is impotent romantically.

You people are just ticked because you always try and predict. This time you was WRONG and it was a great curve ball killing off Lilly. Very bold move as well. Surprises need to happen to make a good show keep on rolling. While she will be missed. It certainly can move on with out her and still be great.

While I agree that killing off Lily was very surprising and disappointing, I will be interested to see what direction the show will take. It will have to be a great story line to keep me interested.

I actually think killing Lily may not have been such a bad move. Yes, it would have been great to see her and Cullen get more time together, but this gives them a chance to show Cullens more dark side. Cullen back on a murderous vengeance spree actually sounds more fun to me than Cullen and Lily Belle on a picnic.

I don't think Lily's dead. We don't see her beeing buried and nobody said she was dead (a part from the sweedy but he thinks he killed her), maybe she is alive unconscious when bohannon brings her in the church. I know there are a lot of chances that it is not true but I need to believe that... I won't let myself believe that she is dead, she was such a strong female character...

Got to agree with the majority of people here. If Lilly is dead all the meandering and ponderous plot difficulties are getting the better of the writers and I will not be watching the 3rd season.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with many of the other posters-bad move writers. While the Swede's character was at a good point to make an exit, since his psychosis seems to have reached its pinnacle, killing off Lily makes no sense. Her character was the moral center of the show and she helped bring layers to Cullen's character. And now what? He's back to being a robot living only for revenge? Dull. Or should we expect another love interest to appear next season to try and crack that tough exterior? How trite. Maybe this SHOULD be the end of the series.

But I'm sure of one, thing, now that Mr. Toole is dead, Eva's baby will be white.
