Rookie Blue Review: Walking Targets

at . Comments

All of 15 Division was "Under Fire" on this edition of Rookie Blue - and no one was immune to the consequences.

It all start innocent enough... well, maybe innocent isn't the right word.

Finding the Shooter

Nick and Andy were perfecting their version of morning exercises and their technique didn't involve the risk of shin splints. I know all of the McSwarek fans hate it but every week these two become a more appealing couple. They're honest with one another. They seem in sync emotionally and they have fun.

On the flip side, Sam and Marlo were anything but in sync. Marlo was pulling back as she took her leave of absence and was staying with her sister. She needed the space to pull herself back together. And in an odd sort of role reversal, Sam was pushing her to stay connected.

The shooting in the park was truly frightening. One moment Chloe was joking with Andy about her secret relationship with Nick. I couldn't help but laugh when in this Rookie Blue quote Chloe told Andy…

Nick's great. I mean, if I wasn't climbing Dov mountain I would be all over that. | permalink

Only Chloe could make a line like that sound oddly sweet.

When Andy slowly turned around to find Chloe still standing in front of her with blood seeping through the fingers around her neck, it was a truly horrifying moment. The fact that Chloe didn't simply fall unconscious after the gun shot, that she was talking and bleeding and terrified... it made it feel all the more real.

Andy stepped up in those moments. As scared as she was she kept her head, called it in and pulled Chloe to safety all while they continued to take fire.

To find out later that Chloe has a husband was a definite surprise. I didn't see that one coming any more than Dov did. But hearing how she and Wes wed impulsively during a weekend at Niagara Falls sounded completely in character.

I know it was an awkward situation, but Chloe and Wes were obviously separated, or at least how he said, I must still be her emergency contact, certainly gave that impression. I wish Dov had told Wes that he and Chloe were dating.

Dov was blindsided but I hope he mans up and decides to fight for Chloe. They're just too darn cute together.

Speaking of cute, once again Steve Peck won me over. He was worried about Traci going out on the street to search for the sniper but he respected her job and didn't try to dissuade her. Instead he offered to team up.

Then he said exactly what was on his mind. He asked Traci why she didn't want him to meet Leo and then he made it clear that he was serious about her. Not only was it incredibly sweet but it was so completely refreshing to have a character be so direct and honest about their feelings without hesitation. If Traci's not a little in love with Steve Peck, I think I am.

And wasn't it great to finally get some sort of follow up on Noelle? I've really missed her this season and now that she's officially cancer free, I hope we get to see a lot more of her in season five.

The only surprise about Gail and Holly's kiss was that Gail initiated it. I really would have thought it would have been the other way around. It was fun to see how off kilter they both were from the experience It will be intriguing to find out where this couple goes from here.

The last half of the episode had me wondering who was going to get shot next. When Celery showed up frantic after her encounter with Kevin Ford, I immediately hated the thought of him targeting Oliver. 15 Division would lose its heart without Shaw.

Then it looked like Ford's focus was on Marlo. As she walked in her bare feet across the wood floor in nothing but her bathrobe, I had my heart in my throat. It felt as though I was walking beside her. All I could think during those few agonizing seconds was where is her gun?!?

Thankfully it was Sam and Andy at her door. Those two had had quite a day.

Sam was completely focused on the case and protecting Marlo. The one thing that definitely got his attention was watching Andy kiss Nick before he went out on patrol. If Sam was unclear about Nick and Andy's relationship, he certainly isn't now. And if the kiss wasn't enough, the fact that Andy shared all of the behind the scenes details of the Kevin Ford case with Nick showed just how much she trusts her new boyfriend.

The question is, now that Sam knows how serious Andy and Nick are, will he do anything about it?

Of course the other side of that question is, will he have the chance?

Now that Ford has Oliver and is still gunning for 15 Division, is anyone safe? What's your guess on who will live, who will die, and who will still be a couple as we head into the Rookie Blue season 4 finale?

Oh, where to begin….I have been a fan of Rookie Blue since the beginning and after season 2 I became a Sam and Andy fan. I still continue to be and hope the writers work things out for them in the beginning of Season 5, but overall I have been disappointed with the direction Season 3 & 4 have gone. My main complaint is where they have taken Sam’s character. He was at his best in uniform or undercover as the super cop chasing the bad guys and bantering back and forth with them in the squad car. Making him a detective has weakened him and has turned him boring. I do not buy it and I can understand somewhat why people like Nick and Andy better. Nick is now in that role. Plus, how many detectives do they have now? 4 at any given time? They do not need that many and Callaghan fits this role better.
Both Sam and Nick are good cops and I consider both to be men and not boys. However, both are not perfect and are flawed. Sam grew up in an abusive household and has trust issues, but he is extremely loyal to the people he cares about and will break rules to protect them. He broke rules for Andy when they thought her dad killed someone, He helped her track down a witness she lost, and he also was about to look the other way when he found out his T.O. accidentally killed someone. All of which are wrong, but she did not have a problem with it. This is who he is and part of the reason Andy loves him. In the episode prior to this last one, it was her decision to tell Sam that Marlo was in trouble instead of telling Callaghan, right? Asking Andy to add a log entry to protect Marlo should not have been a surprise to her since she knows Sam better than anyone else and knows firsthand just how far he goes for people. I do not think it was him being selfish to ask for her help, he would have done the same thing for anyone else in 15. I think she was more upset with herself for keeping Marlo’s bi-polar a secret in the first place. Nick on the other hand is just as loyal and really did not have a problem with what Sam asked Andy to do because he would have done the same thing for any one of his Army buddies or anyone in 15. However, his treatment of Gail really bothered me. I liked those two together and I felt he really toyed with her emotions. He left her at the altar once and vanished to the war. He then comes back and starts at 15 where he eventually gets Gail back, only to vanish on a 6 month undercover op shortly after Gail went through her kidnapping ordeal and needed him. He then starts having what I consider to be an emotional affair with Andy that ends up breaking Gail’s heart. Something Sam would never do.
I think by the end of this season we will be left wondering if Sam will make it after being shot and wondering if Andy will stay with Nick or be with Sam. Since each season starts with a 3 -6 month time lapse, Season 5 will open with Sam okay but still recovering and us finding out who she chose. We will see…

I think the only one leaving 15 division would have to be Marlo. I really don't think anyone is going to die (actually I hope). I love Nick and Andy what a refreshing relationship for her someone she can be open with. I love Chloe her quirky ways always brings a smile. I think Sam is selfish he knows how much Andy loves her job and tries never to do anything she can get into trouble for - but he is always making her do things. Nick was really cool about what she did for Marlo.

The person that said Sam was a man and Nick a boy...has it wrong. Beefy BROODING sexuality is not the description of a real man. An open heart, patience, sensitivity, wanting open communication and sharing...which promotes a trusting friendship (since the lust factor changes with time) and unabashed unconditional love for his partner. That is a description of a real man It is not Andy's job to make Sam a better man or to change him, that's exhausting and unfair for both of them and very one sided in terms of Andy's needs. Nick and Andy together, make each other better and stronger both separately and together. By the way..I used to really like the idea of Andy and Sam, until I saw how they were together. I do not dislike Sam...I just think Andy and Nick are wonderful and healthy together with lifetime potential. It is no accident that Sam went with Marlo, she is a female version of him. It was easier for him. I acknowledge that Sam really loves and misses Andy but he is just incapable of the type of relationship she wants and deserves.

if you wanna marry a man then u marry sam if you wanna be with a boy then u marry nick. im sorry but nick is in the minors and sam is the big league. HE Is more mature and ignites the kinda passion that we dont see with andy and nick.everyone can talk all the smack bout sam that they want but there is good reason for who hw is and the writers have never shown much back story and sam isnt that happy guy but when hes with andy you see that sofy side that makes u melt and he would protect her at all costs. he loves her more then anything, they will be bsck together for good!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, Gail turning lesbian is really the end of the show for me.
How could they ?!? What the hell ?!?
In any case there's too much relationship fuss in the show.

I hate to say it - but, I felt like shooting Chloe myself when she was drilling Andy about Nick. My irritation quickly turned to feeling sorry for her when she was shot - poor girl. I hope she is not killed off and Dov should fight for her - they are so cute together.
Is management really going to be upset w/Marlo for stalking that Ford guy- he turned out to be a real nut case?!
@Loyda - High five on the who you marry and who ya date comment - I couldn't agree more.

After reviewing the promo again for next week's finale, Ford is wearing Oliver's police jacket. You can see the name Shaw engraved on the front. He obviously has taken Oliver's police uniform which is how he is able to sneak in the police station undetected.
I'm so ready for next Thursday but then again do not want the season to end either! Next summer is too far away!

Oliver is the main man, I liked that he asked about Noelle and there was an update on her cancer. Chloe is so annoying
I hope she does not come back in season five. Gail was really good with the deaf girl, and liked her in the car with Oliver. Andy and Nick are boring, can't wait for next week

Here it is... Sam is the kind of guy you date and Nick is the kind of guy you marry!

Oops, I meant "Kelly" not Katie! "Kelly
September 6th, 2013 11:54 AM Look...I love Sam Swarek as much as the next Rookie Blue fan...but I think that his chemistry with McNally is only good when they're pining for each other and shooting longing glances across the station. When they were actually a couple, I just wasn't a huge fan of their chemistry together. McNally and Collins? I'm a big fan. Plus, I'm sorry...Peter Mooney is gorgeous. Let's be real about that. So why are we hating on poor Collins? I'd like to see McNally get to be happy for a change. Same with poor Dov and Chloe. Why can't one damn couple on this show be happy for more than 2 episodes at a time? Surely there are other stories to tell than yet ANOTHER love triangle. Sigh.
Finally...take note, Rookie Blue writers...if you harm Oliver Shaw in any way...I WILL END YOU. Fair warning."
