Lucy Griffths is out. And Angelica Celaya is now in.
A few days after making the surprising decision to oust Griffths as the female lead in Constantine, executive producer Daniel Cerone confirmed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour yesterday that Celaya would take her place as the show’s female lead.
The Telemundo star will portray Zed on the NBC series, a psychic from the original Hellblazer comic book series.
"She’s someone who can go toe-to-toe with John,” said Cerone. “She’s intuitive. She can detect bulls-it."
Cerone said he and the creative team “felt a bit hamstrung” by the nature of Griffiths’ character, Liv, while Zed will bring with her a “dark past.”
Griffiths will still appear in the pilot as Liv, though Cerone teased that a new scene has been added in which she's killed off.
Constantine will star Matt Ryan as the title character and air Friday nights on NBC this fall.
