Killing off a main character paid strong dividends for Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 1.

The return of this NBC drama set a series ratings record by drawing in 9.4 million total viewers and a 2.7 rating among 18-49-year olds.

On CBS, meanwhile, the NCIS Season 12 opener led the way in overall viewers (18 million), while NCIS: New Orleans (17.1 million, 2.5) opened respectively, but fell 17 percent from the return of NCIS: Los Angeles last fall in the same timeslot.

ELSEWHERE:

  • Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD (5.6 million, 1.9), fell by 60 percent from last year’s premiere. Ouch.
  • The Person of Interest Season 4 (10.7 million, 1.8) was also down, 22 percent from last year’s opener, to be exact.
  • Forever garnered 6.5 million viewers, holding steady for its second episode.
  • Among total viewers, however, NCIS: New Orleans took over from CBS’ Madam Secretary as the most-watched new fall debut. We'll see if that lasts.
