Constantine Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Quid Pro Quo

at .  Updated at .

Well, we finally got Chas' backstory on Constantine Season 1 Episode 10 and the writers sure did cut it close; there's only 3 episodes left!

Funny that a spell cast by a drunk Constantine changed Chas' life forever. Unfortunately, he's not immortal but Chas certainly has more than 9 lives. Though he does use them up rather quickly.

Is it me or has the "everyone hating on John" thing grown a bit old? I mean, the guy's not perfect sure, but he tries his best you know? Cut him some bloody slack for Pete's sake.

Since I'm not a big comic book reader, I felt at a disadvantage this week not being familiar with Felix Faust. The character probably impressed diehard Hellblazer fans much more since they have some real background on the guy. I just thought he was a dick.

I mean, taking the soul of a little girl. That's got to be the lowest of the low right?

Zed finally came clean about the Resurrection Crusade this week and the leader is definitely her father.

John: If you need to disappear, best place to do it is here.
Zed: All the protections you've used, they're not enough. He'll never stop searching for me.
John: You're yet to flinch in the face of the underworld. Why are you so afraid of a man from this one?
Zed: Because he's my father.

So the scry map was "painting the big apple red" as John put it. Chas was already on his way there, so Zed booked a flight for the two of them.

We flashback two years and watch John cast some ridiculous looking protection spell over Chas. I had a feeling when that metal band hit the stage the pyrotechnics were going to backfire. Now we know the first time Chas died was in that fire and he collected all those souls.

Chas arrived late to the family home and we quickly understand why his marriage didn't work out. It was heartbreaking to see his little girl lying on the floor like a ragdoll.

Chas: You're the only one I trust with her John.
John: Well whatever this is mate we're in it with you alright. So, you want to tell us what happened?
Chas: I found her on the floor bleeding. We raced here I saw six other patients with the same symptoms. They're calling it a coma, but this isn't like any coma I've ever seen.

John quickly noticed the girl's chapped lips. "Celestial burn marks" he called it, left behind when the soul departs. John decides they should visit a medium pal of his. That poor dude had no idea what was coming before he burnt to a crisp. Again, I get that John's trouble and his friends usually die, but stop trashing the guy already damn.

The séance was hijacked, and we soon learn that Felix Faust is behind all this. Zed's vision leads the trio to a cloaked warehouse.

I've heard it said that nine tenths of reality is perception, and in my trade, it’s eleven tenths.

John

Crazy how sometimes John seems really powerful, like when he revealed the warehouse and other times he can't seem to cast a basic spell. Felix Faust was creepy sure, but if he was so powerful why send John after the soul sucking demon? Couldn't he cast the thing to hell himself? John does manage to dispatch the creature, but by killing it Faust changes his deal.

I liked that Chas took matter into his own hands for the sake of his little girl. Though I did believe for just a moment he was willing to trade all his souls in exchange for Geraldine's. It was a nice surprise he planned to blow himself up and Faust right along with him. Only one of them would come back from the dead right? He's only got 31 souls left now.

We both die today, but only one of us is coming back.

Chas

Ultimately, Faust's death released all the souls he captured and all's well that ends well. Like I mentioned at the top, not being familiar with the character probably didn't endear me to him. He wasn't my favorite villain of the season. I miss Papa Midnight, don't you?

One last thing, Zed mentioned she saw John's mother and that her death wasn't his fault. More info on that please!
