It was more than an ABC marking campaign. It was how viewers felt on the first night of February Sweep, as the return of Grey's Anatomy Season 11 earned the series 8.6 million total viewers, along with a 2.7 rating among 18-49-year olds.

Elsewhere, Scandal (10.4 million/3.6) also returned solidly, drawing its biggest audience since the Scandal Season 4 premiere.

Oddly enough, How to Get Away With Murder (9.1 million/3.0) was down from its previous new episode.

ELSEWHERE around the dial...

  • American Idol (9.2 million/2.2) fell 14 and 21 percent week-to-week, while Backstrom (5.3 million/1.4) dropped 34 and 26 percent from its opener.
  • The Big Bang Theory was the most-watched series of the veining, with Mom drawing its second-biggest audience ever and Two and a Half Men and The McCarthys both ticking up. Elementary was down, however.
  • Parenhood surged to 5.5 million viewers for its finale,, while The Biggest Loser also saw improvement.
  • The Vampire Diaries (1.5 million/0.7) decreased by down a tenth to tie its series low; while Reign (1 million/0.4) mostly held firm.
