If you thought we'd have to wait a little longer to hear the name "Saul Goodman" you thought wrong! (But that's okay, because so did I.)

Within the first few minutes of Better Call Saul Season 1 Episode 4, Jimmy McGill uttered the name by which he will eventually be known.

"It's Saul," he said. "S'all good, man." Badum CHHHHHHHH....

It was a small moment, but an important one for the evolution of this character. How, in however many episodes of Breaking Bad plus the preparations for this series, I never hit upon the fact that "Saul Goodman" might come from "It's all good, man" I'll never know, but now that I know, I really love it.

Anyway. That's not even what "Hero" was about. That was just a fun little cherry on our Monday night sundae.

It's clear that Betsy Kettleman was the mastermind behind her husband embezzling money from the city. When Jimmy pitched himself to become their attorney, it looked as if Craig was ready to throw in with him. Betsy was having none of that on the grounds that Jimmy McGill is the kind of attorney guilty people hire.

And they are most definitely not guilty. They just happen to have taken a bag with over a million dollars in it on an impromptu middle of the night camping trip five miles behind their house. 

Their guilt (or innocence) is for the good folks at Hamlin, Hamlin, and McGill to worry about. Jimmy tried. He gave them a cover story and they gave him a stack of money. 

Jimmy's attempt not to accept the bribe was a valiant effort, and for a time it seemed as if he hadn't taken the money. While I'm glad he did because it moves the story along, part of me hoped he hadn't and that he was still holding out hope that he would be able to do this the "right" way. 

Meh. "Right" is a little overrated when everyone else is lapping him. So Jimmy took the money and he used it to "build his church" in what was quite a genius little move.

First, Jimmy needed a new image, so he bought one. Then he bought a billboard. That billboard bought him a lawsuit from HHM. The judge ordered Jimmy to take the sign down and Jimmy bought a man. 

Jimmy's plan to gain fame and attention by "saving" the man who fell off the billboard platform was hilariously intelligent, the kind of move that makes us love this character. But knowing it was coming detracted from the reveal atop the platform when the sign man said "took you long enough" and they shook hands and exchanged money. 

If the flashbacks continue in this fashion, they'll be problematic. At this point, four episodes in, it's well established that Jimmy is a resourceful man who did not always use his intelligence for good. We don't need to see every trick he played in the past in order to know that his past is informing his present. 

It's a minor complaint and it's my only complaint, so that's pretty good. 

The only way the flashback is somewhat justified is by looking at Chuck's face when he braved the electromagnetic fields to retrieve a newspaper from the neighbor's yard. (Very cool editing for a very weird condition, by the way. Great scene!)

Chuck knew upon reading the paper that Jimmy's stunt was staged. We'll see his disappointment play out on Better Call Saul Season 1 Episode 5, and we'll hopefully get a little more insight into what happened to trigger Chuck's condition. Kim seems to have a soft spot for both Jimmy and Chuck so, aside from working with the eldest McGill, what's her connection to these brothers?

Finally, at some point, Jimmy is going to cross paths with Nacho again and here's hoping he has another con up his sleeve to help him out when he does. Nacho knows Jimmy called the Kettlemans. If Jimmy's speech about how he actually did Nacho a favor and kept him from doing something really dumb didn't work, this is not the last we've seen of the right hand man of Tuco Salamanca.
