Pat Harrington Jr. Dies; One Day at a Time Star Was 86

Sad news today out of the world of television:

Pat Harrington Jr.  –a veteran actor best known to television audiences for his role on One Day at a Time as building super Dwayne Schneider – died on Wednesday after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was 86 years old and had recently been hospitalized after a bad fall.

Harrington Jr. won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for playing the colorful character on this long-running CBS comedy.

One Day at a Time aired from December 1975 to May 1984 and featured Bonnie Franklin as a divorced mom raising two teenage girls (Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli) in an apartment in Indianapolis.

In 2012, Harrington made his final onscreen appearance, guest-starring as the manager of an apartment building on Bertinelli’s Hot in Cleveland.

Other guest star credits on his resume include The Munsters, McHale’s Navy, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Love, American Style and Marcus Welby M.D.
