Secrets and Lies Season 2 Episode 1 Review: The Fall

at .  Updated at .

Eric Warner may have killer blue eyes, but the real question is: did he kill his wife Kate?

We probably won't find out the answer to that until the end of the season. Nevertheless if this season is anything like Secrets and Lies Season 1 then we're in store for twists, turns, and a hell of a lot of frustration.

Secrets and Lies Season 2 Episode 1 introduced us to a new case, with a new murder victim, and a new unfortunate soul who will most likely spend the rest of the season in Detective Cornell's cross hairs.

A Downward Spiral - Secrets and Lies

On the surface Eric Warner seems to have everything together. He's rich, successful, and is soon to be taking over his father's firm. His wife Kate is the love of his life, and as he recently found out, the mother of his unborn child.

Oh how quickly that unraveled!

For the most part the premiere was a bit slow and predictable. It laid down the groundwork for the rest of the season and introduced us to the Warner family. It gave us just enough information to form a few snap judgments about the characters.

It also reintroduced us to Detective Andrea Cornell. Arguably one of the most irritating detectives of primetime television.

Eric: She's my wife.
Det. Cornell: She's also my victim.

She's interesting to watch, but I almost forgot just how unlikable she can be. She's blunt, crass, and tends to lack anything that resembles sympathy. When she sets her mind to something, it usually involves harassing anyone close to her victim and more often than not abusing her authority.

Not much has changed on that front.

When a person plunges 12 stories to their unfortunate demise, one would immediately assume it was suicide. Detective Cornell came onto the scene doubting that was the case long before she had reason to.

After all, Kate was successful, in love, and happy. Unfortunately, for Eric, that makes him suspect number one in her murder.

They are investigating this as a homicide. When a wife is murdered. Nine times out of 10 the husband did it. Kate is dead. You are the husband. You are the prime suspect.

Amanda

One of the most intriguing aspects of this season, is that we are presented with a successful family with money and a heck of a lot of reach. Between John Warner's wealth and Amanda Warner's legal expertise, we might actually have a family who can give Detective Cornell a run for her money.

That's going to make the cat and mouse game interesting!

It's going to be great to watch Cornell actually struggle for a change and face some blow back and friction. It's going to be difficult for her to railroad Eric, when he and his family are not only loaded but have connections everywhere. And John Warner proved he's not afraid to use his connections to protect his son.

When you do interview my brother I need to be there, as his council.

Amanda

Amanda isn't keen on seeing her brother go down for murder either.  I loved that she saw through Cornell early on, and even brought up the fact that Cornell has a reputation for arresting the wrong people. It didn't take long to question whether she was acting out of genuine concern for her brother, or if it was something else.

She apparently was Kate's best friend, and they both went to law school together, but she didn't seem to know much about Kate and what she had going on. I find it odd. But nothing was as odd as when she was sweating profusely and popping pills, dismissing whatever was going on with her as "Woman problems." Drugs came to mind.

Anybody go to see mom?

Patrick

In fact, as expected with rich families, all the Warners seem to have a heck of a lot of secrets. Did anyone else think their mother was dead? Apparently she isn't, but to the other two Warner siblings she may as well be.

And did anyone else notice how hesitant John was to let his kids spend the night with him? I mean his son just lost his wife and baby, and is the primary suspect. There shouldn't be any hesitation about him staying with him for a few days. What does he have to hide?

But no one has as many secrets as the victim!

Yes, your wife was pregnant. But her body shows she already gave birth to a full term infant. Mr. Warner, you didn't know that your wife gave birth to another man's baby?

Cornell

The more we found out about Kate, the easier it was to believe that she really was killed. The woman has a heck of a lot of secrets! I was shocked to find out that she previously had a child, because she seemed so excited about Eric and her having one. I'm talking, first time mother excited.

And what about the P.O. Box that no one knew she had or the secret IPad with a passcode that Eric couldn't crack? Or the fact that Eric's friend Neal, for whatever reason, can't stand her? There is so much about Kate that we don't know, and apparently Eric doesn't know either.

Cornell: You claim you didn't kill your wife. What about Steven Porter?
Eric: I didn't mean to kill him!

But just when it seemed like Eric was a sympathetic character being blindsided, and unfairly being treated like a suspect, we found out that he killed before! Cornell moseying about interviewing people during a gathering meant to honor the dead victim was in poor taste.

Hell, her shouting out that Eric had a previous juvenile record and spent time in a facility was fifty different types of wrong and in poor taste too. But damn, I didn't expect him to go shouting out that he didn't mean to kill whomever this guy was.

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see what other twists, turns, and revelations are made throughout the season. Kate Warner is a woman of mystery and Eric Warner has a sketchy past! It should be quite a season!

What did you think of the premiere? Do you have any theories? Do you think Eric is innocent? What more do you think Kate is hiding? Do you find Cornell as awful as I do? Hit up the comments below and don't forget you can watch Secrets and Lies online right here on TV Fanatic!
