Supergirl Season 2 ended on several cliffhangers with Mon-El getting sucked into a wormhole when leaving Earth. But not only that, viewers discovered that another baby left Krypton on the day of the planet's destruction.

With the Girl of Steel getting ready to return for her third year, we've learned quite a lot about Supergirl Season 3 in the last few months. If you wish to not get spoiled then stop reading any further.

1. Supergirl Will Struggle With Her Humanity

With Mon-El being forced to leave Earth in the Supergirl Season 2 finale, this will definitely have a huge effect on our beloved hero in Supergirl Season 3. The third season is all about dealing with what does it mean to be human, which will seemingly affect everyone on the show.

According to series lead Melissa Benoist, when the new season starts, Kara is leaning a lot on being the Girl of Steel. That is something the recent trailers have been teasing quite a lot.

“The first two seasons, she’s trying to… figure out her identity. When we pick up on Season 3, the scale is leaning very heavily on Supergirl.”

2. Cat Grant Will Be Back For A Couple Of Episodes

Even though we wish we could have her back full-time, Calista Flockhart will be back as Cat Grant this season. Flockhart’s character will first be seen in the season premiere titled “Girl of Steel” and her return has been teased to be “very clever”.

But it sounds like we may get a little more of Cat this season compared to Supergirl Season 2. Flockhart is reportedly going to recur throughout the season. The last we saw of her was in the season 2 finale where viewers discovered that Cat knew about Kara’s super-secret.

3. Erica Durance Returns To The CW For Another Super-Role

Despite the fact that Alura Zor-El died when Krypton blew up, Supergirl Season 3 will still feature Kara’s mother, but with a twist. Erica Durance, best known for playing Lois Lane on Smallville, will be taking over for Laura Benanti as Alura in the third season of the show.

It still remains to be seen how Supergirl Season 3 will use Durance besides flashbacks and holograms. Durance is now the Lois Lane-actor that Supergirl has brought on from previous Superman media after Teri Hatcher’s recent visit on the show.

4. Jane The Virgin’s Yael Grobglas Joins The DC Action

While not a straight on Supergirl/Jane the Virgin crossover, one of the talented stars of the telenovela is coming to National City. Yael Grobglas, who plays the twisted Petra, will be appearing in Supergirl Season 3 as the DC villain Psi.

Psi is described as a psychic villain who uses people’s own minds against them. But Psi will be put on Supergirl’s radar as her agenda is revealed. Per The CW, it’s been teased that Psi’s interaction with Kara will affect the Girl of Steel in surprising ways.

It remains to be seen how many episodes Grobglas will be seen in Supergirl Season 3. But if you are a Jane the Virgin fan, then be sure to tune in for Supergirl Season 3 to see her as Psi.

5. Double Dose Of Chad Lowe

Chad Lowe is getting into business with Greg Berlanti once again after having worked with the mega-producer on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters. But Lowe’s visit come with double duty as he will both star in episode 4 and direct a future episode.

He is committed to preaching his faith and changing the lives of his followers. Lowe will then direct the seventh episode of Supergirl Season 3 titled “Wake Up”. That episode will most likely air on Monday, November 20.

6. A Big Kara/Alex Flashback Episode

Episode 6 of Supergirl Season 3 will be a big one for any Kara and Alex fans out there. Titled “Midvale”, the sixth episode will be a flashback-heavy one for the Danvers sisters.

However, expect young Kara and Alex to look a little different this time. Izabela Vidovic and Olivia Nikkanen will be taking over for Malina Weissman and Jordan Mazarati as Kara and Alex respectively.

According to Benoist in a recent interview, we’ll learn more about the relationship between the beloved sisters in “Midvale”.

“You’ll get to see, through the way they interact, how their relationship started when Kara first came to Earth, how it grew, how it became so close and why they’re so close nowadays.”

Expect the episode to air sometime in November!

7. Morgan Edge Vs Lena Luthor

Adrian Pasdar is no stranger to superhero shows and after having starred in NBC’s Heroes and recurred on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., he is adding DC To his list. The actor is set to recur as the villainous Morgan Edge from the DC lore.

Described as a charismatic capitalist, Morgan is a ruthless real estate developer who doesn’t stop until he gets what he wants, no matter the cost. Lena Luthor, who is a full-time cast member this year, will be clashing with Morgan and it won’t be long till the Girl of Steel gets involved too.

Only time will tell if Morgan’s connection with Intergang from the comics will play into Supergirl Season 3 at all.

8. Maggie Sawyer Will Be Sticking Around…For A While

One of the fan-favorites from Supergirl Season 2 was Floriana Lima’s Maggie Sawyer. Throughout the second season, Maggie formed a deep bond with Alex Danvers as they eventually fell in love. Supergirl Season 2 ended with Alex proposing to Maggie whose answer has yet to be revealed.

But it was shortly announced that Lima would only return as a recurring guest star in Supergirl Season 3. So while we won’t see as much of Maggie in the new season, she will be around. How this affects her relationship with Alex remains to be seen.

At least fans can be assured that the show won’t kill Maggie off, according to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. In a recent interview, the showrunner stressed that Maggie will always continue to be part of their world.

“Maggie does not die. I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of that. Maggie will continue to exist in the world and we hope that if the opportunity presents itself for her, that she’ll come back from time to time.”

Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly that they have figured out a respectful way in writing Maggie out as a regular. Teasing Maggie’s first five episodes of the season, Kreisberg stresses that it’s some of the most emotional writing they have ever done.

“Unfortunately, Floriana decided to move on, which left us with, how do we write her out as a regular while still honoring these two women who were deeply in love with each other? Taking a page out of some of our own personal dating history, we’ve come up with a story that we really feel like honors what’s come before them, and honors how much they love each other, how much they mean to each other, and how much they’ve changed each other’s lives.

It’s some of the most emotional stuff we’ve ever done, and Floriana has been so good in these first five episodes. Episode 3 is all about Maggie and her dad, played by Carlos Bernard, and it’s some of the most heartbreaking stuff I’ve ever done on anything I’ve ever done.”

9. Daddy Sawyer Is Coming To National City

Speaking of Maggie, we’ll be seeing her father this season for an episode. Carlos Bernard (24) will guest-star as Oscar Rodas who, like Maggie, is also a cop.

As viewers may recall from Supergirl Season 2, Maggie doesn’t exactly have the easiest relationship with her family. We learned that Maggie’s parents are quite conservative and were not really happy about their daughter’s sexual orientation.

Things got so rough for Maggie that she was thrown out of her own when she was just a teenager. What exactly brings Daddy Sawyer to National City remains to be seen.

10. Kevin Smith Returns To Direct

Since his first directed episode on The Flash and Supergirl, it’s always a blast whenever Kevin Smith gets to direct the DC shows and thankfully, he is back for another Supergirl episode. Smith revealed a while back that he would be directing episode 5 of Supergirl Season 3.

While we don’t have the episode title or any details about his episode, expect it to air in early November. Hopefully Smith will also visit The Flash again this year to direct an episode of The Flash Season 4!

11. James Olsen Will Get A New Love Interest

While we haven’t learned a lot about what James will be up to this season, he’ll be getting some love in his life this year. According to Jessica Queller, one of the new executive producers, not only is he getting a new love interest, but he’ll be stepping it up at CatCo big time.

“He’s going to have a new love interest. He’s going to step up at CatCo, back to his routes as a journalist… that sort of harkens back to Jimmy Olsen’s character.”

Among all of that, James will also continue to help protect National City as Guardian. Who do you think his new love interest will be? Sound off in the comments below.

12. Martian Manhunter’s Father Is Coming To The Show

Last season we got to meet Sharon Leal’s Miss Martian and this season another Martian is coming to town. But this time it’s a bit personal because J’onn J’onnz’s father is making his debut this year.

Alias star Carl Lumbly will recur as M’yrnn J’onzz from the DC Universe. Lumbly also has a major Martian Manhunter connection himself. The actor voiced J’onn in Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited, along with other animated projects.

M’yrnn is described as a pacifist religious leader on Mars who pushes his son J’onn in unexpected ways. David Harewood, who plays everyone’s favorite Martian, said this about the dynamic at San Diego Comic-Con.

“[It’s] not an easy one. There’s going to be some complications. J’onn always thought he was the last Green Martian. It’s going to be extraordinary to discover that not only is he not the last Green Martian, but the other one is his dad!”

13. Alex & Kara Will Take Center Stage In The 4-Show Crossover

While little is known about this year’s Arrowverse crossover, one of the executive producers gave a big tease for the big 4-show event this fall. Not only is Supergirl getting a proper crossover chapter this year, but it will feature some of the show’s other characters.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kreisberg teased that Kara and Alex will be at the center of this year’s crossover. According to the showrunner, you’ll see a lot of the Danvers sisters in the crossover.

“Kara and Alex are at the center of it through all four hours. One of the things we’ve been doing a lot this season is getting back to season 1 and really making it Danvers sisters-centric, so a lot of what’s going on this season is Kara and Alex doing things in tandem, and the crossover won’t be any different.”

What other Supergirl characters do you hope to see in the crossover? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

14. Mon-El Will Be Back…Eventually

Supergirl Season 2 ended with several mysteries, one being Mon-El’s sudden disappearance. While Chris Wood will definitely be back for Supergirl Season 3, it has yet to be revealed when and how he returns.

At San Diego Comic-Con, executive producer Robert Rovner teased that Mon-El will be one of the central mysteries this season.

“Mon-El will return at some point… how he returns is one of the central mysteries of Season 3,”

There are several possibilities of where Mon-El may have gone when he got sucked into that wormhole. Perhaps he did a little time travel and went to the future? Did he maybe get stuck in the Phantom Zone?

Sound off with your theories in the comments below about what may have happened to Mon-El.

15. Reign Is The Big Bad Of Season 3

Every new season needs a bigger threat than the last one and this one is going to make it…Reign (we had to do it once). Odette Annable is bringing Reign to life from the comics where she is better known as one of the World Killers.

While the show’s take on Reign will be a little different from the comics, we’ll first meet Reign as single-mom Samantha, according to Kreisberg. Even though he didn’t reveal when we’ll see her transformation into Reign, Kreisberg teased in an interview that she won’t know about her true background.

“When we meet Reign, she’s just a woman. Her name is Samantha and she’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign; she has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see how it manifests.”

The show has cast Emma Tremblay (Elysium, The Judge) as Ruby who is described as a smart, independently minded National City kid. Her fascination with the Girl of Steel will end up putting her in jeopardy because of it. We can’t help but wonder if Ruby is actually Samantha’s daughter.

Given that Reign is known as a World Killer, could Supergirl Season 3 possibly end with the Death of Supergirl? Only time will tell, but be sure to tune in on Monday nights starting in October.

Be sure to let us know what you're excited about for the third season in the comments below!
