The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Intangibles

"Intangibles" is a sweet and satisfying episode of The Good Doctor, with entertaining scenes between Shaun and the two women in his life.

On The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 9, Dr. Melendez works with Dr. Murphy to save a young boy from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with congenital heart anomalies.

Meanwhile, Claire searches the hospital for her patient's missing lab sample while teaching Shaun how to flirt.

The Best Course of Action - The Good Doctor

As soon as I saw Gabriel's cute face and big eyes, I knew he was going to live. Allegra was right. Gabriel has intangible qualities: his precious face and his heartbreaking story. There was no way the writers could kill this child for dramatic effect. It would just be too cruel.

Nonetheless, I still sat on the edge of my seat as Dr. Melendez and crew tried to figure out ways to fix Gabriel's heart.

I was particularly captivated by the scenes where Dr. Melendez and Dr. Murphy practiced on a model heart using virtual reality tools. Is this something doctors can actually do? It was fascinating to watch.

Is fear of failure a good reason not to do this?

Dr. Shaun Murphy

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Melendez's heart grow three sizes in recent episodes. He is protecting his residents and starting to trust Shaun's instincts.

The real power, though, came from his persistence to figure out how to save Gabriel. Once he spoke to Gabriel's mother and got past his initial fear of failing, he refused to stop trying. During the virtual reality scene, he never gave up, even when it did not work right away. He just kept saying "Again" in order to master the surgery.

You will save Gabriel.

Gabriel's mother

The entire storyline led to one of the sweetest scenes of the series. I could not help but tear up as I watched Drs. Melendez and Kalu sit with Gabriel and laugh at the television show with him as his mother slept. These characters are now completely likable, compassionate, and compelling.

Shaun's relationships with both Claire and Lea continue to develop in different ways. Each one, though, is a delight to watch.

Shaun and Claire seem to have established a workplace sibling connection. Claire's lessons in flirting provided the audience with some light comedic moments. She is patient with him, and she enjoys being in his presence and learning about his unique view of the world.

It is a heartwarming relationship, and I always look forward to any moments between the two of them.

On the other side of the relationship spectrum, I honestly think I could watch an hour of Shaun and Lea and be content. Freddie Highmore and Paige Spara have incredible chemistry. They have made the natural progression of the relationship between these two characters real and believable.

Being lonely and being alone are two different things.

Lea appears to have difficulty finding people who accept her for who she is. In Shaun, though, she has found a trustworthy friend and possible romantic partner. She gets to be herself, unguarded and at ease, in Shaun's presence. In return, Shaun gets to do the same, without being judged for his disorder.

I am a bit concerned that Shaun's erratic behavior in the preview for the upcoming winter finale could deter Lea. I hope that she can stand by him during moments like that. Shaun does not deserve to lose this friendship, and I would hate to lose the joy I feel any time these two characters are on screen together.

Viewers also learned a nice tidbit about Dr. Andrews: he is married to another doctor in the hospital. I was surprised when this information came out, but I liked watching Andrews interact with his wife.

I was especially engaged when his wife questioned whether or not he was still the man she married. She forced him to reflect on decisions he has made as both a doctor and a husband.

When she first started the conversation, I expected Andrews to become defensive and argue with her. Instead, he listened to what she was saying and saw that his actions were hurting her. I loved watching that entire scene, and I hope we see more of this couple in the future.

Gabriel waits - The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 9

On The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 8, Dr. Glassman made some questionable comments to Shaun about the robbery being his fault. Many of you mentioned this in the comments section of my previous review, and I utterly agree. The comments were hurtful, unnecessary, and just plain wrong.

Between those comments and Glassman's desire to find Shaun a life coach who can help him, I cannot blame Shaun for thinking that his mentor was giving up on him. My heart broke when he asked him, but I do not think Aaron is giving up on Shaun.

I can't always be there. I can't always help you the way you need to be helped, the way you deserve to be helped.

Dr. Glassman

There have been a few clues throughout the season that Dr. Glassman may be ill, or at the very least, close to retirement. It means he could be unable to keep a constant eye on Shaun soon. If that is true, it would make sense that he wants to leave Shaun with the best care available. At least, I hope that is what is happening.

The characters have grown wonderfully so far this season. It would be disappointing if suddenly Glassman stopped trusting Shaun, especially when he fought so hard for him to be at that hospital in the first place.

Dr. Kalu and Gabriel - The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 9

"Intangibles" was an ultimately satisfying episode. It delved deeper into the relationships between these doctors, resulting in a calmer hour of television than the previous robbery storyline.

From the preview, the winter finale looks intense and heartbreaking. So, I'm grateful this happy outing came between two more action-packed ones.
