9-1-1 does an opening sequence better than anyone.

Seriously, I say this every week but I could not take my eyes off the screen for the first twenty minutes of 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 3. No matter what the emergency, the scenes are just full of emotion and there's a palpable feeling of dread and hope that accompanies every rescue.

This is far from the first show to cover this kind of material and it won't be the last, but this show really does know what it's doing. And this second season is shaping up to be better than the first.

This week picked up right where 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 2 left off, with LA still a colossal mess, the 911 lines blowing up and Hen trapped.

It wasn't looking good for Hen for awhile, as she was completely isolated and trapped in that underground parking garage. When she heard the cries of someone else, I was hopeful that she'd be able to get some help in getting out of there. But that wasn't meant to be.

Russ seemed like a sweet guy and it's a shame that his life was cut short in that way. But his death served as a wakeup call for Hen, as soon after he passed, she left a heartbreaking message for Karen.

And I mean heartbreaking. If your eyes weren't watering during that call then you better get your eyes checked!

Hen is fierce, strong, brave and a slew of other powerful adjectives. But as much as a fighter as she is, she's also human. And never more so than in that moment.

You know who else is brave and strong? Hen's colleagues.

Chimney: So have you given much thought to what you'll do after we're fired?
Bobby: We were ordered to leave the building. We're just leaving a different way.

There was absolutely no way Bobby and Chimney were going to leave Hen in that building without attempting to save her. They would rather go down with the ship than live the rest of their days knowing they didn't do everything they could to rescue her.

Their plan to pull the debris with the massive SUV was pretty smart, given the situation and their limited resources. It wasn't surprising when the chain snapped, but it was surprising when Buck, Eddie and a team of fellow firefighters showed up to help them find Hen.

It was such an amazing moment and truly embodied what these people do on an everyday basis. They do not give up on anyone.

The rescue of Hen, Kat and Paisley was a highlight of course, but there were so many other things happening simultaneously that tugged at the heartstrings as well.

Buck and Eddie are truly becoming the bromance I never knew I needed on this show! They work so well together and honestly, they should see if Ali is interested in volunteering at the station because she was a welcome addition to the team.

Side note, can we briefly discuss Buck calling her Abby? It's clear they are going to find a way to mention Abby every week, which is fine and all, but in this situation, it felt very, very forced. I get that the show wants to keep Abby a part of the show since she will always be embedded in its DNA, but that whole exchange wasn't necessary.

Athena: I was worried about you all day.
Bobby: I was worried about you too.

An exchange that was necessary? Everything between Bobby and Athena at the end.

Bobby coming by to just to see Athena and make sure she was okay is the stuff romance novels are made of. And their sweet banter back in forth was just the right amount of sweet.

Michael inviting Bobby in for dinner was a nice touch and while a little predictable, it was still a beautiful moment to behold. At the end of the day, Michael wants what's best for Athena and his children and I applaud him for that.

Everything won't be rainbows and unicorns for them forever, but at that moment, after a long stressful day when death was brutally thrust in all of their faces, they came together and it was the perfect ending to a bittersweet day.

Loose Ends

Was there a spark between Buck and Ali or was it just me? Granted, Buck could have a spark with a street light, but still, I felt a rapport there that I wouldn't mind seeing again.

Eddie reuniting with his son at the end of the episode left me with the cheesiest grin. As did Hen bringing home Paisley. From tears to smiles, this show really brings the feels.

Maddie has found her calling as a 911 operator! I love the scenes where she gets to help others but I'm ready for her to interact with the rest of the cast. I need a family dinner at the firehouse ASAP!
