How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 10 Review: Don't Go Dark on Me

Now, this is more like it!

How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 10 was full of the twists and turns that we've come to expect from this show. There were multiple storylines, many moving parts and a few twists along the way.

While the front half of every season always leads us to the mystery, the second half always brings us the coverup. And boy is this going to be some coverup.

Asher Ponders - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 10

The episode is equally parsed between the continued Gabriel saga and Miller's murder. And while it may have seemed like these were two completely separate entities, they converged in a way that I don't think many people saw coming.

Nate and Bonnie were working overtime to come up with alibis and find a way to pin Miller's disappearance on anyone but themselves. It was hard to see how they were going to achieve this, but once the ball got rolling, it seemed pretty clear where things were going.

There were so many things in motion right before Miller's death, and it can't be unusual for the district attorney of a major metropolitan city to have made a few enemies along the way. But will anyone believe that one of those enemies is the governor?

It seems awfully ambitious to think that it will be easy to pin this murder solely on the governor. Bonnie, Nate, and Asher may have gotten past round one with the FBI, but finding a way to dupe one of the most powerful agencies on the planet will be extremely difficult.

Bonnie Laments - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 10

And as they grapple with how to frame Governor Birkhead, they're faced with new doubts about the man in the snow's supposed duplicity.

When Bonnie was listening to the conversation between Miller and the warden, it was fairly obvious that he wasn't going to tell the warden explicitly, "Please kill Nate Leahy, Sr."

Miller wasn't a dumb person, and I'm not convinced at all that those pleasantries with the warden weren't code for something else.

And Bonnie, fresh off of looking at post-it notes and finding out her deceased ex had a diamond ring on him, is going to have a lot of regrets while they figure out whether or not Miller was complicit in the elder Leahy's murder.

Speaking of Bonnie, we've always known that she was cold-blooded, but her ability to switch back and forth from her normal stoic nature to sadness and back again is chilling.

But getting back to Miller, it was quite the shock to learn that he was the person Gabriel was calling after his late-night information session with Annalise.

What the what? Have those two ever even shared a scene together?

I have no idea what the connection is, but it lends more credence to my belief that Miller isn't at all the innocent man the show and Asher are trying to make us believe he was.

While all this was going on, Annalise was in another part of the city with Eve trying to figure out how to rid herself of the new problems that Gabriel has created.

I thought there would be more to the whole Eve/Frank connection and why she showed up at Frank's door with that email back in the day. But it was explained away rather quickly and was pretty lackluster.

And what was the purpose of showing Annalise the email now?

You've never understood. Even now. Your privilege lets you be gay. I'm black from the damn bible belt. So stop trying to figure out what's gonna make me happy. You don't know what that is. I don't know what that is. But it isn't about finding a person, a man or a woman. I have to figure it out. I have to save me.

Annalise [to Eve]

The plan to go after Vivian as a means to get Gabriel to stop poking his head around seems to be an okay one for now, but it seems like Eve was brought back for a grander purpose than to show Annalise a piece of paper.

The connection between the two has always been undeniable but this time Eve was in a different, happier place then we've seen her, and she seemed to be wanting to challenge Annalise to get out of her own way and finally find her happiness.

But the thing with Annalise, that it was nice to hear her finally admit, was that no one can save her. Not Eve. Not Nate. Not Frank. Not Bonnie. Not the law. Not her students.

Annalise has to save herself from the demons that have followed her throughout her entire life. She can no longer hide behind the sins of others and a bottle of vodka. Could this be the time she finally makes steps towards finding her happiness? If that's even possible at this point in her life.

Now that she is getting thrust into Miller's murder and subsequent coverup, we may be waiting some more to see Annalise make some changes for the better.

A Talk - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 10

Everything Else You Need To Know

  • Silly me, I thought it would take longer than one episode for the Keating crew to figure out that Nate killed Miller. But once Bonnie and Nate were forced to bring Asher into the fold, the clock was ticking.
  • Even though Laurel kept the whole Gabriel thing a secret, I do like how in sync the kids are with one another now. Thinking back to the early seasons when they were forced together by choice, it's kind of amazing to see them all cohabiting and raising a child together.
  • One throwaway comment about Emmet and Annalise, I can handle. But there were THREE! I love Timothy Hutton just as much as the next person, but I haven't felt much sexual chemistry between the two.

Things are really starting to pick up now, and new questions are beginning to arise! What were Gabriel and Miller up to? Was Miller innocent? What will the Keating crew do now that they know about the murder?

How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 10 Quotes

Gabriel: Look, I get it. You don't want to talk about this.
Michaela: Why would we? You've been lying to us this whole time, manipulating us into kissing you.
Gabriel: That's not what that was.

Hey, you're supposed to be the hopeful one in this house. Don't go dark on me.
