NBCUniversal Eyes 2020 Launch for New Streaming Service

NBCUniversal is the latest network to enter the world of streaming, by gearing up to launch its own service.

The news is unsurprising, especially when you consider the momentum streaming destinations have garnered over the last few years.

Probably the best part of this news is that NBCUniversal will not be giving up its 30 percent stake in Hulu, meaning fans of NBC shows will still be able to watch them on Hulu.

Viewers will reportedly garner access to the ad-supported service at no additional if they already have a cable subscription, while those who do not will need to pay to use the ad-supported version.

There will also be an ad-free version that will come at a higher premium. It's unclear at this stage what type of content will be available.

It's possible that there will be exclusive originals on the service, as well as the full roster of NBC's shows.

The service is still a while away. It is not slated to launch until 2020, so it leaves NBCUniversal with plenty of time to firm out the details and give potential subscribers a chance to assess whether it's a service worthy of their time.

“NBCUniversal has some of the world’s most valuable intellectual property and top talent, both in front of and behind the camera,” Steve Burke, CEO of NBCUniversal, said in a statement.

“Many of the most-watched shows on today’s popular streaming platforms come from NBCUniversal. Our new service will be different than those presently in the market and it will be built on the company’s strengths, with NBCUniversal’s great content and the technology expertise, broad scale and the wide distribution of Comcast Cable and Sky.”

The service will be run by NBCUniversal Cable Chairman Bonnie Hammer.
