Nightflyers Canceled at Syfy

Syfy has grounded Nightflyers for good.

The premium cabler has swung the ax on the high concept, high budget series after just one season on the air, according to Deadline.

The series which was based on a novella by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin will not be back for a second season after struggling with low ratings.

Set In 2093, the series focused on a team of scientists who embark on a journey into space aboard an advanced ship called the Nightflyer to make first contact with alien life-forms.

However, when terrifying and violent events occur, the team begins to question each other and to realize there is something on-board the Nightflyer with them. It’s up to the crew to save the ship and themselves.

It starred Eoin Macken as Karl D’Branin, David Ajala as Roy Eris, Jodie Turner-Smith as Melantha Jhirl, Sam Strike as Thale, Maya Eshet as Lommie Thorne, Brían F. O'Byrne as Auggie, and Gretchen Mol as Agatha Matheson.

Despite being one of the most highly anticipated new shows of 2018, Nightflyers was saddled with low ratings from the get-go.

It averaged just 395,000 viewers and a meager 0.09 rating in the all-important 18-49 demo.

The disinterest from viewers could be attributed to the show being buried in December and aired across ten consecutive nights. It was a different way of doing things, and it clearly did the show no favors.

Given that Netflix took the rights to Nightflyers outside of the U.S. it was widely expected that the series would stick around ... even with low ratings.

Many shows have managed to be kept around as a result of the heavy pockets at Netflix, but it appears even the streamer was not high on the series.

Syfy has been cleaning house of late. Channel Zero and Z Nation have been canceled recently, while The Expanse which rated pretty well was saved by Amazon after the cabler opted to let go of it.
