The Flash Season 6 Episode 7 Review: The Last Temptation of Barry Allen, Pt. 1

Thank you for the nightmares, Wallace!

The Flash Season 6 Episode 7 delivered on various levels of scary and proved me completely wrong! Ramsey envoked a terror that has not been felt since the days of Zoom, just as promised.

The gushing black blood Ramsey spurted out of his hands was both disgusting and terrifying.

The plant is dying - The Flash Season 6 Episode 7

The mere fact that Ramsey's blood expels from his insides and enters other people is gross, but the added layer of being able to control others with the ability creates horror.

Even then, Ramsey wasn't giving Zoom vibes until he began his mental terror. The breaking down of Barry's willpower was heartbreaking.

Choose life.

Barry's family gathering for Thanksgiving seemed so sweet until their food poured the black ooze. Then we watched as every family member and friend ate the black liquid.

The image contorted faces in disgust, but the overlying metaphor stood as Ramsey tried to use Barry's family to convince him to accept the blood.

As Ramsey tempted Barry with the prospect of life after Crisis, Barry's doubts grew stronger. He was losing control to Ramsey, who dazzled Barry with how much his blood could help the world and save him from impending death.

Whisper louder - The Flash Season 6 Episode 7

As he saw Nora, you know Barry wanted to give into Ramsey's allure of life. How could he not? A part of me wanted Barry to as well.

Barry's pain wanting to hold Nora was so raw and vulnerable. Grant Gustin knocked his performance out of the park. I cried as he knelt over Nora's crib and later confessed his fear of death.

Please, I know it’s not real. I just want to pretend for a second. I want to hold my baby.

No one could blame him for wanting to see his daughter grow up. He suffered so much pain because of his powers that you'd think the universe would allow him a happy family.

Barry's anger, fear, and doubt about The Crisis all came to ahead with his accusations towards the speed force. Then came my second fit of tears.

Speed Force - The Flash Season 6 Episode 7

Barry, echoing the Reverse Flash, stabbed the speed force version of his mother in the chest with a vibrating hand. That jaw-dropping moment is up there with Dean becoming a demon in Supernatural

What was scarier -- Ramsey playing psychological mind games to control Barry, or Barry losing his mind and arguing with the speed force, or Barry using the vibrating hand against his mother's look-alike?

Life demands your death.

Ramsey

Anxiety ran high as Ramsey and the speed force fought for Barry. The tension grew when the stakes reached their maximum point.

The brilliant writing in this episode expertly left us unsure about who won the tug-a-war battle until Iris showed up. The way infected Barry acted towards her was a big clue. There was no way Barry would treat Iris like that.

Thankfully, Iris knows her husband and quickly notified the team that Barry was taken over by Ramsey. That could only mean one thing -- complete and utter disaster. Negative Flash has arrived!

Speaking of Iris' investigative skills, my new favorite squad is Team Central Citizen. Iris, Allegra, and Kamillia make a great team.

I don't know how you are going to write this article, but I know you'll never forgive yourself if you don't.

Allegra

Their pairing is bringing a wonderful flavor to the show that I wouldn't mind explored several times a season. There is no doubt that Wallance will blend the interesting stories Iris' team chases into the main storyline as the season goes onwards.

Finally, Team Central Citizen is slowly developing fundamental female friendships that were previously lacking on The Flash. Iris and Caitlin were never that close because, truthfully, Caitlin is Barry's friend.

Though Cecile is a great addition to the team as a female regular, she is married to Iris' father. There is still a parental presence within her interactions that doesn't allow certain boundaries to be crossed.

Iris needs to develop her own support group. There has been no mention of her having friends outside of Star Labs, which seems odd since Iris is so personable.

Someone else struggling with friends is Killer Frost. She had finally been given the reigns after six years but will once again be taking a back seat, at least for medical issues.

Truthfully, Caitlin wasn't missed. Killer Frost deserved her chance to shine and find a life for herself. Her dynamic with the team was thoroughly entertaining and refreshing.

Falling Down - The Flash Season 6 Episode 7

Killer Frost added humor and vulnerability, similar to a child learning to walk. Her deciphering life using The Book of Ralph was something I could watch all season. Hopefully, Killer Frost emerges soon and stays for much longer.

Barry, on the other hand, has fallen prey to Ramsey's mind control. Ramsey has taken control of Barry, creating The Negative Flash and there is no telling what he will do next.

Sidenote:

  • What is Nash trying to accomplish in those caves? He mentioned The Monitor running from him, but why?

  • Why is no one discussing Nora? If Barry dies before she's concieved, she'll never be born. Crisis is in two days people!

  • Why is Iris starting sentences, not to mention paragraphs with a conjuction in her article?

  • Does anyone else worry if Michelle Harrison will knee problems? This poor actress has spent majority of her appearances on her knees crying.

  • Is anyone else a Bones fan without issues, but this black ooze just made you turn away? Just me?

Be sure to watch The Flash online and catch up with anything you missed.
