Reef Break Canceled at ABC

The adventures of Cat Chambers are over.

ABC has canceled Reef Break after one season and 13 episodes, according to reports.

The Poppy Montgomery-led series focused on a pro surfer, a former smuggler and con artist who worked as a fixer for the government on the fictional Reef Island.

The supporting cast included Ray Stevenson, Desmond Chiam, Melissa Bonne and Tamala Shelton.

The series was filmed on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was initially produced for French broadcaster M6, but ABC later stepped in, effectively making it a co-production.

As such, it was always difficult to rule the series a success or a failure because ABC paid a fraction of the cost as a result.

It's unclear whether M6 plans to continue with the series, but it will likely have to go above and beyond in the ratings to prove it should return.

Montgomery, Poppy

Reef Break Season 1 averaged under 2 million total viewers and a 0.31 rating in the all-important 18-49 demo, failing to make much of an impact.

This put it at the bottom of ABC's summer slate, and with the news that Grand Hotel was checking out of ABC's line-up after a decently rated freshman season, it might mean ABC is scaling back scripted summer offerings.

It wouldn't be much of a surprise. A lot of the broadcast networks have had less and less scripted TV during the lower viewed summer months over the last few seasons.

For now, Reef Break Season 1 Episode 13, airing September 13 will serve as the series finale. If M6 opts to renew it, we'll keep you up to speed.
