We soon learn that the West VII are in control of the temporal facility and Jones is simply a mechanic. She did not recognize Cole, but his blood was proof enough to believe his wild story. Alt-Jones tells Cole the first outbreak in her reality took place in Chechnya and was caused by operation TROY. He seems confused by this and mentions Cassie and their mission. Alt-Jones had never heard of Dr. Railly, which made it clear her death was the point of divergence. Cassie was killed in 2015, not allowing her to deliver the message that sent Cole on his mission. Before travelling back in time, the leader of the West VII had to approve the use of the machine. Instead of Deacon, it turned out Ramse was in charge now. He had killed Deacon during a rebellion and assumed control. Ramse needed some convincing Cole was who he claimed to be. "Hey, only girl you've ever loved is Elena. Your mother's name is Roberta. You told me once she's pretty and that whenever I make jokes about banging her you laugh, but I know secretly it pisses you off" Cole tells him. That seemed to work, because Ramse agreed to send Cole back to 2015 to fix things. Before leaving alt-Jones warns Cole that "sacrifice is the only way." Back in 2015, Cole and Aaron partner up to save Cassie. The duo make their way to the Night Room, but events play out exactly as they had before; the Pallid Man takes off with Cassie. While Cole and Aaron attempted to track the old man's van, Cassie was given that same hallucinogenic drug and told repeatedly "You are walking through a red forest and the grass is tall." It appears the "Striking Woman" repeating this phrase is the Pallid Man's superior. She informs him the Witness thinks Cassie is important and wants to meet her. Though we've seen a red forest in Cole's visions before; the house and the man in Cassie's were new. We soon learn the man in the plague gas mask is the Witness. Luckily, Cole and Aaron trace the van to a greenhouse and rescue Cassie. Cole splinters back to 2043 and discovers things are back to normal. His happiness is short lived though, as Jones confirms the time jumps are killing him.
