A group of New France settlers are massacred by Indians. Indentured servants Rene Sel and Charles Duquet and a handful of Filles du Roi arrive at Wobik, New France. English barrel maker Elisha Cooke and his associate Gus LaFarge discuss the massacre which Gus had staged. Despite an offer from Cooke, Sel and eventually Duquet become property of eccentric Frenchman Claude Trepagny. Hamish Goames and Yvon also arrive. They hunt for the missing Hudson's Bay Fur Trading Company agent Randall Cross, who disappeared after the massacre. The Mother Supreme lectures the new Filles du Roi on the duties they will learn. Hamish and Yvon meet innkeepers Francis and Mathilde. Hamish and Yvon interrogate an uncooperative Constable Bouchard, who makes no secret of his disdain for their employer. He encourages them to check out the massacre site for themselves. Filles du Roi Melissande and Delphine discuss what they want in a husband. Mother Supreme discovers Melissande isn't a virgin. Melissande convinces Mother Supreme to let her stay. The trio reaches Trepagny's domain and he introduces them to Mari, his half-French, half-Wendat lover and mother to their son Theo. Mathilde warns Gus that Hamish is looking into Cross's disappearance. Mari declares the ram which Trepagny brought back is cursed and she and Duquet dispose of it. Trepagny asks after the ram and Mari and Duquet lie about it. Sel is enchanted with Mari. Trepagny and Sel pulls the infected tooth from a reluctant Duquet. Trepagny sends Duquet to retrieve the ram's carcass. Duquet runs away. Trepagny sends Sel to find him. Hamish and Yvon find a naked, incoherent priest and a teen girl at the massacre site.
